Come to the Duke in LA 2011 meeting to learn more about the reconfigured program, which will be re-launched in spring 2011! Prof. Esther Gabarra, one of the academic directors of Duke in LA, will be on hand to give an overview of this exciting program and answer questions. This event will be held in Allen 226 from 5:30 pm- 6:30 pm.

Human Rights: ICC Prosecutor Speaks at Duke
A Gambian lawyer who serves as Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal
Court (ICC), Bensouda will speak about the office’s goals and priorities for
the future on April 7th. In 2004, she was elected by the ICC’s Assembly of States
Parties to be the Deputy Prosecutor in charge of prosecutions at the ICC. She
acts under Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Prosecutor of the ICC. As a representative
of The Gambia, Bensouda helped negotiate the Rome Statute of the ICC in 1998. The talk is sponsored by the International Criminal Court Student Network at
Duke University, the Duke Human Rights Center, the Duke Law Center for
International and Comparative Law, the Duke Law Career Center, the Duke Bar
Association and the University of North Carolina School of Law. This event will be held at the Duke Law School, it is a free program and a light lunch will be served. For more information, please contact rights@duke.edu

Fuqua School of Business presents a panel entitled 2010 Black and Lation MBA Organization Conference. Panel topics will range from social entrepreneurship to leaving a legacy within an organization, and the day will culminate with our keynote speaker, Bill Strickland. Bill is the President and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award, and author of Make the Impossible Possible. April 9th
The Fannie Mitchell Expert-in-Residence program features accomplished professionals who come to Duke to share specialized knowledge and provide individual career advice to students. The program's purpose is to stimulate new ideas and provide advising for students who are searching for career directions. Expert-in-Residence encourages collaboration by providing opportunities for Duke faculty and students to recommend an expert whom they would like to bring to campus. Check back later for more details on this event. This Friday's Expert-in Residence will be featuring Eva Danielle Whittels and an informational on Careers in Fashion. The program will be located in the McClendon 5th Floor Media room from 1 pm- 2 pm.

An Evening of Good Art is a program hosted by the Kenan Institute of Ethics. The student winners of the annual competition are officially unveiled at this exhibit of their talent and knowledge of ethics and aesthetics. This gala signals the opening of the What is Good Art Exhibition, which will run through May 16. Gala and exhibition in the Fredric Jameson Gallery in the Friedl Building on Duke's East Campus. Free parking reserved for attendees on East Quad (first come, first served). Additional parking (free but not reserved) available around East Campus. April 7th
"Why Are Black People So Funny? Racial Comedy or Racial Insult" is a roundtable discussion hosted by the Reginaldo Howard Scholars." The panel will focus on the trials and triumphs racial humor with input from student comedians, graduate students and professors. Make sure you go out and support this event on Wednesday at 7 pm in White Lecture Hall.

April 8th

Hoof 'n' Horn presents Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical RENT based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Collins, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part. Play will be held in Page Auditorium and run from April 8th until April 10th. Ticket admission is $12, but $10 if you're a Duke student.

DUU hosts the annual semi-formal event Duke Royale- Arabian Nights. This event will be held in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens from 9 pm- 12 am. Tickets are sold at the Box Office for $25.

April 10th
In a world premiere made possible by Kronos' ongoing collaboration with Duke Performances, the modern era's most adventurous quartet turns its fierce creativity toward a new, Duke-commissioned work by Grammy-winner Maria Schneider - the first time these two icons of innovation have worked together. Come to the Career Center's new Internship Spotlight Series to hear students speak about their past summer experiences and learn about exciting internship possibilities! Each week a new industry will be highlighted - from technology to human rights and everything in between. This week the series is on Arts, Communication, and Media. The series will be an informal opportunity to talk personally to students who have recently done internships in various fields, working for IBM and ABC, non-profit organizations and top universities. The Women’s Center and the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture is sponsoring Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women, at 6:00pm in the Women’s Center. How does gender impact incarceration? With over 114,000 women in prison, why do we still think about men when we think about prison issues? What can we do to both act in solidarity with those struggling inside while working towards a world outside where prisons are no longer necessary? Victoria Law, author of Resistance Behind Bars and Tenacious (a zine of women prisoners' writings) will examine the particular challenges facing incarcerated women and discuss their past and present strategies of resistance. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, educator, scholar and member of the Durham Harm Free Zone Organizing Committee will talk about the connection between the Harm Free Zone Process happening here in Durham and will encourage attendees to think about solidarity.

The Office of Health Professions Advising is pleased to announce Duke's participation in the 2nd Annual NC Triangle Health Career Expo. The Duke portion of this event will take place from 6:00-9:00 pm in Von Canon rooms B & C. Students will have an opportunity to visit with admissions representatives from a variety of allopathic and osteopathic medical schools, as well as physician assistant, physical therapy, nursing and other health professions programs. The deadline for the Duke-Spelman and Duke-Howard Exchange program is Thursday, April 1. Rising juniors may participate in the Duke-Spelman Exchange Program. Spelman College is a woman's college located in Atlanta, Georgia. The domestic exchange program allows students from Spelman to study at Duke and allow Duke students to study at Spelman for generally one semester. Rising juniors may also participate in the Duke-Howard Exchange Program. Howard University is located in Washington, D.C. The domestic exchange program allows students from Howard to study at Duke and allow Duke students to study at Howard for generally one semester. Approved courses can be transferred back to Duke. Do you want to find a way to contribute to the discussion about the earthquake aftermath in Haiti? Use your experience to generate innovative ideas that can translate into action on the ground through participating in the first annual Duke Global Health Case Competition. This competition is a unique opportunity for Duke graduate and undergraduate students from multiple schools and disciplines to come together to promote awareness of and develop innovative solutions for 21st century global health issues. Common across U.S. business schools, a case competition features teams of four to six students working through a real-life case scenario with the goal of providing helpful strategic recommendations to move the case subject forward efficiently and effectively. The competition is centered on team presentations to judges, who then score student recommendations and award prizes. For more details on the event including registration, click on More Info.

The public will get a chance to experience the popular Duke University course "Sampling Soul" via a live webcast beginning at 6:00 pm at ustream.tv/dukeuniversity. The topic of the class will be the making of the critically acclaimed hip-hop album "Illmatic" by rapper Nasir Jones, aka Nas. Each Friday during the month of February and one week in mid-March, the Mary Lou Williams Center will host Reel Women-Mid-day Movie Marathon, showcase themed groupings of movies about women. The event is held from 12:00-6:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center, and FREE popcorn provided.

The Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture is seeking five (5) undergraduate Work-Study students (Class of 2013) to work in our office beginning Fall 2010, to complete front desk tasks, answer the phone, and serve as Ambassadors for the Center. These are part-time, paid positions working an average of 5 hours per week. Student status and work-study at Duke are required. Also, The Mary Lou Williams Center’s Internship Program seeks to hire four (4) undergraduate students (Class of 2012 and 2011). The Internship program is a diverse program designed to encourage and apply undergraduate students interested in developing and/or increasing skills in the areas of Africana Studies, Jazz, Programming/Events, and Public Relations in a culture center. These are part-time, paid positions working an average of 10 hours per week. Student status is required; work-study preferred, but not required.
REQUIREMENTS
• Enrolled full-time as a student at Duke University
• Strong organizational skills, demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills
• Computer literacy, office skills
• Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, and a good multi-tasker

DELISH of Healthy Devils Peer Educators is hosting Love, Sex, and Hot Chocolate at 7:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. The event will be an open dialogue about love and sexual health in the African-American community nationally and at Duke. This program is meant to encourage positive sexual health behaviors on campus among African-American students and to communicate within relationships. There will be some chocolate sweets as the title suggests.

The Global Semester Abroad (GSA): India/China program will hold an information meeting for prospective undergraduates interested in spending the spring 2011 semester with Duke's newest and most ambitious study abroad program. The session will be held in Allen 103 from 5:00-6:00pm. Under the guidance of Duke professors Anirudh Krishna (India) and Ralph Litzinger (China), the GSA will offer four Duke courses in development, environment, and global health in two of the world's fastest growing economies. The Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee (DUSDAC) will be hosting "Diversity Dinners" (it's our working title) that will bring together 10 students with diverse backgrounds for an engaging meal. Apart from eating an appetizing meal, students will get the opportunity to talk over some controversial, deep, or taboo issues -- some Duke-specific -- in an informal atmosphere. The first diversity dinner will run from 6:00-7:30pm and will be held the Law School and catered by the Refectory. A The Multicultural Center is sponsoring Inside the 2nd Generation Pressure Cooker: A Look at Family and Identity, from 5:30-7:00pm in the Multicultural Center. As we chart our own paths during and after college, how do we reconcile our newfound independence with family expectations and values? This workshop will explore the ways in which our family and youth experiences have influenced who we are and want to become. Together, we will reflect on the impact that family has had on our identities and aspirations. This will be a comfortable space not only to let off steam but also to discuss personal stories and thoughts. We will close by discussing how to navigate through these issues so that we may become more comfortable in our own skin.

Join Duke University's chapter of NAACP this Thursday at 7:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center as we watch the Spike Lee classic, Do the Right Thing, in celebration of Black History Month. Do the Right Thing deals with issues of racial conflict in a Brooklyn community in the 80's as tensions come to boil on a hot summer day. The film received huge box office success and was recently ranked as one of the greatest films in American film history. Dinner will be provided.

"We are not born women of color. We become women of color. In order to become women of color, we would need to become fluent in each others' histories, to resist and unlearn an impulse to claim first oppression, most-devastating oppression, one-of-a-kind oppression, defying-comparison oppression. We would have to unlearn an impulse that allows mythologies about each other to replace knowing about one another. We would need to cultivate a way of knowing in which we direct our social, cultural, psychic and spiritually marked attention on each other. We cannot afford to cease yearning for each others' company." -M. Jaqui Alexander, Pedagogies of Crossing The Becoming Women of Color: A New Way of Knowing workshop will be held in the Multicultural Center at 6:00pm and will use interactive poetics and theater of the oppressed activities to start a conversation about how women color can build community in order to respond to conditions everyday racism and sexism on campus. This workshop is specifically designed to support the ongoing work of Embrace a women of color discussion group dedicated to drawing strength from shared legacies of survival and struggle and building mutual support. Facilitated by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, founder of BrokenBeautiful Press and the instigator of the Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind Educational Series. Alexis is also a founding member of the Cyberquilting Experiment, a new-media enabled project stitching together women of color-led projects to end violence, create media justice and envision a new day. Alexis has led interactive workshops around the world and was named one of UTNE Readers 50 Visionaries Transforming the World for her work to create intergenerational educational experiences that amplify the resilience of Black queer community. Alexis is proud and thrilled to live and love in Durham, North Carolina.

The Zimbabwean Chipaumire updates a vocabulary from ritual dance to beat out pulsing, physical evocations of struggle: she crouches then explodes, turning muscularity into stark grace. In two performances, the Urban Bush Women collaborator (11/12) presents a momentous new piece based on Zimbabwean politics, while the nation's greatest musician, Mapfumo, plays live. Chipaumire's week-long residency at Duke begins 2/22; Mapfumo and his band also appear 2/25. Residency runs February 22 - February 27. The performance is funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation. The performance will be held from 8:00-10:00pm in Reynolds Industries Theater in the Bryan Center and the cost is only $5 for students.

Mi Gente, Duke University's Latino Student Association, is holding auditions for talented individuals and groups to perform in MEZCLA, our annual multicultural show/talent showacase, which is held during Latino Student Recruitment Weekend and attended by ~100 prospective freshmen plus hundreds of current Duke students. This year, our theme is a "battle of the best" where all performers will have the opportunity to win one of three cash prizes that will be donated to the charity of the winners' choice. Co-taught by the Women's Center and Duke Police, there will be a 2-hour Self Protection Workshop designed to empower women with strategies they can use that may reduce risk of sexual assault to themselves or to a friend. This workshop focuses the most common methodology that campus perpetrators use to target potential victims. In this workshop, participants learn the latest research about predatory men, higher risk situations, and verbal and physical strategies they can use to reduce their chance of being victimized. This workshop encourages participants to create a supportive culture for victims of sexual assault. The workshop will be held in the Women’s Center from 2:00-4:00pm.

Head out to Wednesdays at the Center- Notes on Citizenship and Belonging: Afro-Cubans in the U.S. Discuss Race in Las Americas. This talk is presented by the Program in Latino/a Studies & the Global South, where Monika Gosin is currently Postdoctoral Associate. Drawing on testimonials from Afro-Cuban immigrants in Los Angeles and Miami, this talk shows how their experience complicates the Black/White binary and reveals the links between the racialization of Cubans and that of other immigrant and minority groups seeking a space of belonging in the U.S. Wednesdays at the Center is a topical weekly noontime series in which distinguished scholars, artists, and journalists speak informally about their work in conversation with the audience. All events in the series are open to the public and a light lunch is served; no reservation is necessary. Concilium on Southern Africa and Duke University Center for International Studies is sponsoring a showing of Fahrenheit 2010, a feature documentary by Craig Tanner that opened at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa in July, 2009. It asks crucial questions about the impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa in July 2010. The film attempts to go behind the scenes to examine South Africa's preparations for the largest public sporting event the country and the Continent has ever hosted. Named for the popular Duke Women's Studies course called Money, Sex & Power, this weekend provides an opportunity for women – and men – to explore issues of women and power. In a keynote speech, breakout workshops, informal conversations and networking sessions, participants will consider what it means to be a powerful woman by way of three tracks:
1. Finding your personal power: identifying and developing your power through skill-based and practical workshops
2. Developing the power of connections: exploring how women share, care, support, and connect with their families, friends and larger communities
3. Exercising power in the world: focusing on the opportunities and challenges of women's power
Throughout the weekend, student attendees will connect with Duke women from different generations to empower each other and to discuss the big questions facing women today. Interested in teaching children? Red Cross needs you! The Red Cross for Kids Committee teaches basic first aid and safety skills at schools and community centers in Durham. These programs aim at providing fundamental and essential knowledge in a fun and interactive setting. FACT/BAT is a six-week program taught by trained Duke students. Each week, volunteers travel to Durham community centers and give 1-hour long lessons in a classroom setting. While we provide a set of lesson plans, volunteers have the freedom to modify the lesson topics and also generate their own lessons. If interested, please email Yaoli Pu at yaoli.pu@duke.edu OR, come to our first training session on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:30 pm (the training will be around 45 minutes to 1 hour) in the link classroom #2. As a follow up to last year's What Is Spiritual, Anyway? Discussion, psychologists from CAPS will collaborate again with various clergy to host another thoughtful discussion from 7:00-8:30pm in Perkins Library Rare Book Room. Steve Hinkle from Religious Life-Duke Chapel, Abdullah Antepli from Muslim Life at Duke, and Michael Goldman from Jewish Life at Duke will join Joe Talley and Gary Glass from CAPS to offer some conversation starting thoughts and questions. The purpose of this program is not to promote an ideology or specific religious doctrine. Rather, we hope to foster an exchange of caring and curious ideas, to create a space in which we can all learn from each other, and invite new friendships to form.

Did you know there is a 3 year doctorate program for physical therapy at Duke within the school of medicine? It is the Duke University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program. Duke DPT has a student run group known as the Diversity Task Force a group of students within the DPT program interested in raising awareness about the profession of physical therapy among undergraduate students. This interest stems from a genuine concern for the under-representation of minorities within a profession that serves a significant minority population. Auditions to participate in BSA's Annual Fashion Show held during BSAI Weekend 2010 are coming up this week! There will be a Model Workshop on Wednesday, January 20th at 8:30pm, at which you will find out what it takes to be a part of the show, who is involved, and brush up on your cat walk skills. It is not necessary to attend the workshop to audition, but it could be beneficial to you. A new course is being offered this spring called "The Other African Americans: Black Ethnic Diversity in the United States." It surveys the historical experiences and ongoing self-conceptions of African and Caribbean immigrants and their children, as well as Louisiana Creoles of color, Indians of partly African descent, Gullah/Geechees, and so forth in the United States. A prominent sub-theme of the course is the interaction of such populations on university campuses, including Nigerians, Jamaicans, Trinidadians, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work with and write about the lives of these black ethnic populations on and near campus.

If you are looking for a productive and rewarding way to spend your summer, the Northwestern University Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) may be what you are looking for.The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) provides an opportunity for direct involvement in research and a taste of graduate student life at a world class university. Throughout its 24-year history, the mission of the SROP has been to increase diversity among students pursuing graduate education and to provide valuable academic research experiences. The program is eight weeks in length, from June 21 through August 13, 2010, and includes faculty-supervised research, enrichment activities that prepare students for the graduate school application process (i.e. GRE workshop & application workshop) and a research conference. Current sophomores and juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher are eligible to apply. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate schools (African-Americans, Hispanics, & Native-Americans) are encouraged to apply. The Career Center is sponsoring an Interview Prep Workshop in Smith Warehouse, Bay 6 room B177 from 5:00-6:00pm. Your resume and cover letter only get you so far. Your interview skills will land you the job or internship. Attend this workshop for many pointers and to hear what employers are saying about Duke students specifically. Students who attend will also be given a tour of the Career Center's new interviewing space in Smith Warehouse!

Andrea Marston will host a Final Hart Fellows info session 5:30-6:00pm in Sanford Room 223. Are you currently in your last year as an undergraduate at Duke? Are you interested in working and living in a developing country? Do you want to combine academic research with service to a community organization? If the answer those questions is “Yes!” then consider applying to become a Hart Fellow! The Hart Fellows Program, which is part of the Hart Leadership Program and is based out of the Sanford School of Public Policy, offers recent Duke graduates the opportunity to spend 10 months working with organizations around the world that are facing complex social, political and humanitarian problems. TechConnect, an annual event hosted by the Duke University Department of Computer Science and Pratt School of Engineering, brings students and employers together for networking and education and will be held from 6:00-9:00pm in Fitzpatrick CIEMAS Atrium. Based on industry partner feedback, we are pleased to introduce Spring TechConnect 2010! The evening will begin with a vibrant networking event. Students from all classes are welcome to visit with employer representatives, many of whom are Duke alumni. This venue provides a less formal environment than the traditional Career Fair. The format of providing company-specific chat areas and signage for each company offers students and employers an easy way to connect. Networking will be followed by industry break-out sessions geared towards specific industry segments: Medical Device, Energy and the Environment, Software and Computing, Infrastructure, and Engineering Technology.

The Stanback Internship Program is a partnership between the Nicholas School of the Environment and targeted conservation organizations. The purpose of the program is to provide students with significant work experience in grassroots conservation, advocacy, applied resource management or environmental policy. Learn everything you need to know about the Stanback program, application process and interview day at the info session held in LSRC A158. There are over 40 participating organizations and 160 paid internship positions with $4500 stipends made possible by the generous donation of a Duke University alumni. Two info sessions available on December 2nd at 10:00am and 10:45am.

You may have a technical question, you may have a "just curious" question, you may have an ethical question, but all questions are invited. The talk will be held in Crowell 315 from 6:00-7:00pm.

There's no Place Like Home...Or Is there? Going Home for Break and feeling stressed out? Join Women Loving Women from 6:00-8:00pm in The Center for LGBT Life 2 West Union Building and have some fun helping each other figure out what to do when: You are ready to leave after the first two days but your ticket is for weeks away...your parents ask you for the 1000th time if you are dating anyone...your sister tells your parents some girl keeps calling you...your mother wants to know when you started wearing guy's clothes. This group was established two years ago to support women who have an attraction to other women and includes undergraduate and graduate women. They gather periodically for discussion, to build community, and offer support. Many women who love women on campus feel isolated and as though they are the only one who feels this way (no matter how they identify: Bisexual, lesbian, questioning, queer, trans, no labels please). So, if you are looking to be a part of such a support network please join!

The Duke Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown, welcomes guest artist Ray Codrington. A member of the John Brown Quintet, Ray Codrington is a native of Fayetteville, NC and a graduate of Howard University. He has performed and recorded with Eddie Harris, the JFK Quintet, Larry Willis, Hugo Montinegro and Godfather II, and has headlined bands of his own in his nearly fifty-year career. His career has taken him to the famed Apollo Theater in New York, the Howard Theater in Washington, D.C. and festivals and clubs all along the East Coast. Ray has also served as an adjunct professor at East Carolina University and remains in high demand among musicians in the Southeastern United States. The performance will be held in Baldwin Auditorium from 8:00-10:00pm, and the cost is only $5 for students.

Know Your Status will sponsor FREE, rapid HIV testing for World AIDS Day in Bryan Center Meeting Room B from 10:00am-6:00pm. No blood is involved. Cheek swabbing is used instead. Results will be available in only 20 minutes, and those who get tested will receive a free t-shirt!
