The Stanback Internship Program is a partnership between the Nicholas School of the Environment and targeted conservation organizations. The purpose of the program is to provide students with significant work experience in grassroots conservation, advocacy, applied resource management or environmental policy. Learn everything you need to know about the Stanback program, application process and interview day at the info session held in LSRC A158. There are over 40 participating organizations and 160 paid internship positions with $4500 stipends made possible by the generous donation of a Duke University alumni. Two info sessions available on December 2nd at 10:00am and 10:45am.

You may have a technical question, you may have a "just curious" question, you may have an ethical question, but all questions are invited. The talk will be held in Crowell 315 from 6:00-7:00pm.

There's no Place Like Home...Or Is there? Going Home for Break and feeling stressed out? Join Women Loving Women from 6:00-8:00pm in The Center for LGBT Life 2 West Union Building and have some fun helping each other figure out what to do when: You are ready to leave after the first two days but your ticket is for weeks away...your parents ask you for the 1000th time if you are dating anyone...your sister tells your parents some girl keeps calling you...your mother wants to know when you started wearing guy's clothes. This group was established two years ago to support women who have an attraction to other women and includes undergraduate and graduate women. They gather periodically for discussion, to build community, and offer support. Many women who love women on campus feel isolated and as though they are the only one who feels this way (no matter how they identify: Bisexual, lesbian, questioning, queer, trans, no labels please). So, if you are looking to be a part of such a support network please join!

The Duke Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown, welcomes guest artist Ray Codrington. A member of the John Brown Quintet, Ray Codrington is a native of Fayetteville, NC and a graduate of Howard University. He has performed and recorded with Eddie Harris, the JFK Quintet, Larry Willis, Hugo Montinegro and Godfather II, and has headlined bands of his own in his nearly fifty-year career. His career has taken him to the famed Apollo Theater in New York, the Howard Theater in Washington, D.C. and festivals and clubs all along the East Coast. Ray has also served as an adjunct professor at East Carolina University and remains in high demand among musicians in the Southeastern United States. The performance will be held in Baldwin Auditorium from 8:00-10:00pm, and the cost is only $5 for students.

Monday, November 16

Jennifer Staple-Clark will give a talk from 4:00-5:30pm in Physics 128. Clark founded Unite For Sight while a sophomore at Yale University in fall 2000. Under her leadership and with her focus on entrepreneurial innovation, Unite For Sight has cultivated a highly successful volunteer training program, created 90 chapters throughout North America, and developed international programs that provide sight-restoring eye care to more than 200,000 people annually in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Given her extensive on-the-ground experience in international humanitarian work, her background in starting student-driven global health programs, and her passion for mentoring students in these types of endeavors, Jennifer Staple-Clark will offer invaluable insights to members of the Duke undergraduate community, specifically those interested in global health.

Join Jessi Bardill for dinner at 5:30pm in the Bryan Center Multicultural Center as part of the Multicultural Center "Down to Earth Dinner Series" and Prism Professor Discussions: Jessi Bardill is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English at Duke University. She focuses her research on American Indian Studies, American literature, with a current focus on the risks and benefits of genetics research for indigenous communities. Her interests in these areas derive from her Cherokee heritage and her undergraduate education where she double majored in Biology and English at Emory University. Jessi has been active in the Native American Student Alliance, and is now focusing on her dissertation.

Representatives from the Government Accountability Office’s Applied Research Methodology (ARM) and Health Care Teams will host an information session via videoconference from 10:00-11:00am in Room 151 Rubenstein. The ARM team of GAO is interested in speaking with Engineering, IT, and Physical Science graduate students for their internship and entry-level positions. The Annual Alternative Christmas Market, held in the hallway of the Refectory from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offers our community the chance to celebrate the birth of Christ through the purchase of gifts, in honor of family and friends, which help God's children who are hungry, homeless, and living in poverty. Organizations participating in this year's Market are: Durham County Habitat for Humanity, Society of St. Andrew, Interfaith Hospitality Network, One World Market, Basin & Towel's Walltown Angel Tree, Family Health Ministry, Grotto Olive Wood Arts, and Church World Service Christmas cards.


Walltown Neighborhood Ministries coordinates a regular food distribution to help the neighborhood's elderly and disabled families get through hard economic times. WNM needs volunteers from 11:00-1:00pm to help pick up food from the Food Bank. Volunteers will meet at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church at 917 Onslow Street. Sponsor a family for Project Share and help create holiday memories for those in the Durham community who are in need. Without assistance, these individuals may be unable to provide gifts for themselves and their families during the holiday season. Any members of the Duke community may choose to either send a donation that will be used to purchase gifts, or may adopt a family spending $50/person. Adopting a family involves collecting money, purchasing and wrapping the gifts for your family, and delivering them to the DCCE Durham Programs. If you would like to adopt a family, call 684-4377 and tell them the number of family members you are able to sponsor on or before Tuesday, November 23, 2009. A family profile and instruction sheet will be sent to you. The deadline for delivering all gifts to the DCCE-DP is Monday, December 7, 2009.

Help alleviate hunger in Durham! How it works: Fast for breakfast and lunch, and donate the money you would have used on those meals to Walltown Ministries, a food pantry and fantastic organization helping the needy right behind East Campus. Sign up to be a part of the Meal Swap through tabling on the Plaza November 16th through 19th and donate food points to the Meal Swap. Your food points will be donated to Walltown Ministries so they can purchase food for Thanksgiving. Then on November 19th, after fasting for the morning and giving a meal,come get a meal! We're providing all participants with a delicious catered dinner. The dinner will feature speakers, performances, and information about Walltown Ministries and local/global hunger.


Saturday, November 21

Come volunteer with GPSC Community Outreach from 9:00am-12:00pm and help the Durham Foodbank organize their warehouse. Various projects will be available. Dress for the weather as the warehouse is not heated--gloves are a must! Carpools will be arranged as necessary and t-shirts will be provided. SOCA presents Defining Black Identity: The African Diaspora in the Caribbean and the Americas in Social Sciences 139. What is Black? How does it change in different countries? How has the African Diaspora affected Caribbean and American culture as we know? Come hear top scholars in the field discuss the issue of blackness and ethnic variation in the Caribbean and the Americas. SOCA presents a discussion panel where you can find out all these answers, and engage in thoughtful conversation.


STILL BLACK: a portrait of black transmen is a documentary that explores the lives of six black transgender men living in the United States. The film tells stories of their lives as artists, students, husbands, fathers, lawyers and teachers, and it offers viewers a complex and multi-faceted image of race, sexuality and trans identity. The director, Kortney Ryan Ziegler is a gender-queer filmmaker and doctoral student at Northwestern. Kortney's work has screened in several festivals including Queer Women of Color Film Festival and Queer Black Cinema in New York. The producer, Awilda Rodriguez Lora, is committed to creating and promoting art that spurs a progressive dialogue regarding race, gender and sexuality. Kortney and Awilda will be present during the screening, which will take place from 7:00-9:30pm in Griffith Film Theater in the Bryan Center, and for a post-film discussion. Awaaz, Duke's premier South Asian cultural show, is the largest student-run production on campus. They have prepared a star-studded performance with the central theme of Charlie and The Chutney Factory. So please come and bring all your friends and family for what will be a deliciously entertaining night in Page Auditorium at 7:00pm on November 20th or 21st or better yet both! The Duke Djembe and Afro-Cuban Ensembles, directed by Bradley Simmons, welcome guest artist Michael Spiro. Michael Spiro is an internationally recognized percussionist, recording artist, and educator, known specifically for his work in the Latin music field. He has performed on thousands of records with such diverse artists as David Byrne, Ella Fitzgerald, David Garibaldi, Gilberto Gil, Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, and others. Michael Spiro is Professor of Music in the Percussion Department at the renowned Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. The performance will be held from 8:00-9:30pm in Baldwin auditorium.


Sunday, November 22

Join the Duke Chamber Players, a student-run chamber orchestra, from 3:00-4:30pm in Baldwin Auditorium for an afternoon full of great music! The program includes music from Harry Potter, Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Ewalds' Brass Quintet no. 1, Mozart's "Exultate Jubilate" (with solo soprano, Sara Womble) and Bach's Piano Concerto in D minor (with soloist, Tiffany Pao). The concert will also feature an exciting performance by the Duke Percussion Ensemble. Come enjoy a wonderfully varied program followed by a delicious reception!

The Duke Red Cross Club will have three blood drives on Tuesday (11/17), Wednesday (11/18), and Friday (11/20) from 11:30-4:30pm in Bryan Center Von Canon Room B. The drives will take place in the Von Canon rooms in the basement of the Bryan Center from 11:30am-4:30pm each day. The Red Cross urgently needs blood donations, as the H1N1 virus has taken an unfortunate toll on donors this year. Please sign up online for an appointment to donate blood at duke.givesblood.org.
