BSA Programs
BSA will be having its third general body meeting in November. This will be an opportunity to voice your opinions about BSA this year. What have we been doing well? What should we improve? This will be your chance to let us know what you think. 

Academic Events
Minority Scholarship Opportunity
The Raleigh Durham Chapter of the National Black MBA Association Inc. is accepting applications for its 2008 scholarship program awarding graduate and undergraduate scholarships to deserving minority candidates. They are inviting African American students to take part in their 2008 scholarship essay contest. This year's them is "Catalyst of Change." The application and guidelines can be found at www.rdumba.org. 

Monday, October 27th
The Omicron Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. presents Be PRHOactive from 7:00-8:30 in West Duke 105. This is a workshop style event featuring representatives from ACES, the Career Center, and Academic Advising. An ACES representative will help to explain the new ACES system just in time for registration. An internship coordinator from the Career Center will be able to provide information regarding applying for internships and how they can help you in the future. An academic advising dean will provide valuable information regarding planning for your major, graduation, and a four year plan.

Monday, October 27th
Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) is hosting its final information session from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. One-on-one application, resume, and interview presentation and review with an SEO recruiter will take place on Monday, October 27th from 11:00 am-4:00 pm and on Tuesday, October 28th from 9:00 am-1:00 pm in the Multicultural Center. SEO is the nation's premier summer internship program for talented students of color leading to full-time job offers. Freshmen interested in pre-internship preparation, sophomores and juniors particularly interested in finance, corporations, and philanthropy internships, and seniors interested in law internships are encouraged to attend.

Thursday, October 30th
The Career Center Diversity Liaison Team presents Overheard at Duke at 7:30-8:30 pm in the Multicultural Center. Join a candid discussion about majors, careers and life after Duke. You will be given a chance to ask your own questions and to hear from a panel including Duke administrators, Fuqua Business School students, and the Director of the Career Center. The discussion will focus on tips to best market your liberal arts background for any plan you have after Duke and what to do if you feel pressured to think only about consulting an banking jobs. Community Service Events
Community Service Week
Monday, October 27th: Attend the Forum on Service at Home and Abroad from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Thomas Reading Room in Lilly Library. Join past DukeEngage participants as they share their summer immersive experiences and relate them back to the service activities they participated in prior to DukeEngage and upon their return.
Tuesday, October 28th: Join Mayor William "Bill" Bell and Vice President of Durham and Regional Affairs, Dr. Phail Wynn, as they facilitate discussions with representatives of Durham's major political parties about local, state, and national issues that may impact you this election year. 
Wednesday, October 29th: Attend the Community Service Fair from 12:30-3:30 pm in the Bryan Center and explore ways to get involved with community service activities through campus service clubs working with the Service Leadership Council (SLC). The Community Service Center is also co-sponsoring Jazz at the Mary Lou with the Mary Lou Williams Center at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Donations will be accepted to support Project Share and to help purchase holiday gifts to Durham individuals and families in need during the holiday season.
Friday, October 31st: Participate in the Community Service Center's Annual Fall Carnival from 4:00-7:00 pm on East Campus Quad. Children of Duke employees and children attending schools within the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership.

Nourish Week
Nourish International (NI) is a service organization that strives to reduce poverty through student action. NI is hosting its first week with the following events
Tuesday, October 28th: Carve your own pumpkin and grab some tea lights in preparation for Halloween from 4:00-7:00 pm on the BC Plaza
Wednesday, October 29th: Listen to some oldies and R&B performed by the TROSA Band from 5:00-7:00 pm on the BC Plaza. A Hunger Lunch will be served.
Thursday, October 30th: Learn more about Nourish International from the Director and Founder of Nourish International at 7:30 pm in the Duke Coffeehouse. This will be followed by a social with the opportunity to meet members of other progressive, activist, service, and entrepreneurial communities at Duke.

DukeEngage Programs

Freewater Presentations presents Man on Wire on Thursday, October 30th from 7:00-8:00 pm and from 9:30-10:30 pm, on Friday, October 31st from 9:30-10:30 pm in Griffith Film Theater in the BC. Admission is free for Duke students.

Tuesday, October 28th
The documentary "America the Beautiful" will be playing from 7:00-9:00 in Griffith Theater in the BC. This film analyzes the question of whether America has an obsession with beauty. The film examines the degree to which social values, the media, and the fashion industry produce a narrowly defined notion of beauty and how it impacts our lives.
 
The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presents Kickin' It with the Deltas from 7:00-9:30 pm in Armadillo Grill in the BC. Grab some food and join in an insightful discussion about the documentary "America the Beautiful."

Wednesday, October 29th

University/Cultural Fund Proposals for Spring 2009
The deadline for University/Cultural Fund proposals is November 17, 2008 at 5:00 pm. All undergraduate student organizations with an OSAF fund code are eligible to apply. In order to qualify for funding, a member must attend a mandatory information session. This week's sessions will take place on Monday, October 27th from 2:00-3:00 pm, Wednesday, October 29th from 4:00-5:00 pm, Thursday, October 30th from 2:00-3:00 pm, and Friday, October 31st from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Multicultural Center. Sweeney Todd
Hoof 'n' Horn and the Department of Theater Studies present Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd is a killer thriller musical about the barber who did away with his customers with a flick of his razor and and then had his lover serve up the remains in tasty meat pies. This play will be performed on Thursday, October 30th from 8:00-10:00 pm, Friday, October 31st from 8:00-10:00 pm, Saturday, November 1st from 8:00-10:00 pm, and on Sunday, November 2nd from 2:00-4:00 pm. All performances will take place in Reynolds Theater. 

Saturday, October 1st
Duke Performances presents a performance by Billy Bragg from 8:00-9:00 pm in Page Auditorium. Bragg is an English singer-songwriter and political activist who will perform a set of original protest songs including odes to civil liberty, lost love, and standing your ground. Tickets can be purchased for $5 at the Box Office.

Athletics
Saturday, November 1st
Duke Football will play Wake Forest at 3:30 pm at Wake Forest. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

BSA Pre-Performance Mixer
BSA will host a pre-performance mixer for Karamu's performance of "A Day of Absence" on Friday, October 24th from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Schaefer Lobby in the Bryan Center. This will be a time to meet and mingle with leaders of black student groups around campus. Cocktail attire is preferred. 

BSA Heritage and Hope Dinner
The BSA Heritage and Hope Dinner will take place on Saturday, October 25th from 6:30-8:30 pm in Great Hall. This is an annual dinner held during Parents and Family Weekend to honor the history of diversity at Duke. There will be a keynote speaker and a variety of student performances. Registration is required for this event. Please be sure to send an e-mail to bmr7@duke.edu with your name and party count (including yourself) to guarantee seating at the dinner by TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21st AT 5:00 PM. Cocktail attire is preferred.

BSA, in conjunction with DUU and Hart Leadership Program, will be hosting a debate between Michael Steele (chair of GOP Action Committee) and Harold Ford Jr. (Chair of the Democratic Leadership Conference) on Wednesday, October 22nd from 7:30-9:00 pm in Page Auditorium. Both African-American officials will be talking about issues relevant to college students today. Be sure to pick up your free ticket at the Box Office. The WILD Conference is a one-day leadership program designed specifically for college females. This year's theme, "Making Connections," focuses on how to make the critical connections necessary to become a leader. Over 300 eighth-graders will be invited onto Duke's campus to take a tour of the university and its campus for a day. The goal of School Days is to encourage eighth-graders to choose a college track for their courses in high school, so that they can attend college. "Day of Absence"
Karamu Drama Group presents "Day of Absence," an ironic piece using a reversal of minstrelsy to depict a rural southern town as it struggles to solve the disappearance of all of the black townspeople.  The play will be performed on Friday, October 24th at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7:00 pm and on Sunday, October 26th at 2:00 pm with doors opening at 1:30 pm. The Multicultural Center presents MCC Chats from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Multicultural Center. MCC Chats is a biweekly dinner discussion exploring various subjects in a relaxed and fun environment. This week's conversation will be about managing academics at Duke.

Friday, October 24th
United in Praise (UP) presents the Parents Weekend Concert and Reception from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Angle Amphitheater in the Duke Gardens. 

Student Affairs presents the Parents' Weekend A Cappella Showcase from 7:00-8:30 pm in Nelson Music Room (East Duke 201). This event brings many of Duke's talented and diverse a cappella singing groups together in concert. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children and Duke students.

The Duke Jazz and Djembe Ensemble will take place from 8:00-10:00 pm in Baldwin Auditorium. Percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be a guest artist for the night. Tickets are $5 for the general public and free for Duke students and senior citizens.

Saturday, October 25th
Duke Chorale, the Duke Symphony Orchestra, and the Duke Wind Symphony present the Parents' Weekend Concert from 8:00-9:30 pm in the Duke Chapel. Tickets are $5 for general admission and free for students and senior citizens.

Sunday, October 26th
Duke Performances is bringing famed tap dancer Savion Glover to campus from 8:00-9:00 pm in Page Auditorium. Called the greatest hoofer of his generation, Glover will perform in a way that breaks the barrier separating music and physical art.  Ticket prices range from $5 to $38 and can be purchased at the Box Office.

We will be having our second general body meeting of the year on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This is your chance to find out what is happening in October with BSA, hear from football players and coaches about the upcoming Homecoming game, and get hype for Homecoming 2008!!!!

First of Firsts: BSA Homecoming Kickoff Party
We will be hosting a party on Thursday, October 16th from 10:00 pm-2:00 am at Club 9 on Ninth Street. Come out as we kick off the first night of one of the biggest weekends in 2008. Celebrate Homecoming with BSA, friends, alumni, and students from area universities. Remember to bring your college ID and $5.00 to get in. Active members will get in FREE!! 

BSA Game Day Celebration
Join BSA and the Duke Football Office on the quad on Saturday, October 18th from 11:00 am-3:00 pm to celebrate the team and get ready for the game. 

Parents and Family Weekend 2008

An encore production will take place on Sunday, October 26th at 1:30 pm in the same location.

Election 2008
Learn the facts before you cast your vote!! Watch the third and final Presidential Debate from 9:00-10:30 pm. This debate will focus on foreign policy and can be viewed on several television stations.

Do you plan on voting in North Carolina? If so, you can register and vote on campus in the Old Trinity Room in the West Union Building on West Campus beginning on Thursday, October 16th and lasting until Saturday, November 1st.

The Franklin Humanities Institute presents Wednesdays at the Center: "The House that Toni Built at Random: Contemporary African American Fiction and the Shadows of the Black Arts Movements" from 12:00-1:00 pm in John Hope Franklin Center 240. Dana Williams, English professor at Howard University and FHI-Mellon HBCU fellow, will be lecturing on this interesting topic.

Thursday, October 16th
The Department of Political Science presents the Ella Baker Tour at 4:30 pm in White Lecture Hall. This tour seeks to commemorate and reinvigorate the influence of the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC) by enlisting students and young activists to organize events for a multigenerational, intergenerational dialogue.  This event will be hosted by Frank Stasio from NC Public Radio and appearances by Annie Pearl Avery, Ira Grupper, Efi Nwangaza, Gwen Patton, Al Pertilla, and Theresa El-Amin.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents Soul on Soul: The Life and Music of Mary Lou Williams at 1:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Dr. Tammy Kernodle, Associate Professor of Music at Miami University (Ohio) will discuss the life and music of Ms.Williams in her book Soul on Soul, which tells the story of Williams' musical career and personal life. Global Health Focus: Local and International Disparities
Are you interested in global health and would like to learn more about this subject? If so, you should consider enrolling in the Global Health Focus for the Spring 2009 semester. The deadline for applications is this Friday, October 17th so hurry up and apply if interested. The following four courses are included in this focus:

International Law and Global Health: This course is taught by a human rights lawyer from South Africa
Journalism and Public Health: This course is taught by a  journalist who covered West Africa for Le Monde for several decades

9th Annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Conference
This conference will take place on Saturday, November 1st from 10:00 am-5:00 pm here at Duke. The WILD Conference is a one-day leadership program designed specifically for college females. This year's theme, "Making Connections," focuses on how to make the critical connections necessary to become a leader. The Mary Lou Williams Center presents its 25th Anniversary Gala from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Von Canon rooms in the Bryan Center. This evening recognizes the 25th anniversary of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture and will include a dinner celebration. Tickets cost $50.00 for the public and $25.00 for students.

President Brodhead's Homecoming Dance will take place from 9:00 pm-1:00 am in Wilson Gym. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks while enjoying live bands and performances throughout the night.

"Diego and Me: Hendricks on Velazquez"
DUU presents "Diego and Me: Hendricks on Velazquez" on Thursday, October 16th from 7:30-8:30 pm at the Nasher Museum of Art. American artist Barkley L. Hendricks talks about drawing inspiration for his own work from the Spanish old master, whose work is currently on view at the Nasher.

Looking to be part of an intensive, yearlong, nationally-recognized leadership program from Duke undergraduates that combines academic study, community service, field research, critical reflection, mentoring, and leadership development? Come learn how to get involved in Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL), part of the Hart Leadership Program based at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at their information sessions. Current and former SOL students will share their summer research and leadership experiences and how they have become engaged in the local, national, and international communities. Duke Human Rights Center presents "Freeing an Empire's Slave" by Adam Hochschild from 5:00-8:00 pm in LSRC B101. Award-winning journalist Hochschild will speak about his recent work on the Abolitionist movement in 19th-century Great Britain. He authored King Leopold's Ghost, the basis for the film featured in this series. The event will be free and followed by a reception.

Tuesday, October 7th
The Mary Lou Williams Center presents MLWC Art, Jazz & "Forrealness": A Dialogue with Visiting Artist in Residence Barkley L. Hendricks led by Professor Richard J. Powell (Art, Art History and Visual Studies). Hendricks, 2008 Visiting Artist-in-Residence, will hold his first public event during his eight-week residency in the Mary Lou Williams Center at 7:00 pm. He will be visiting Duke University from October 1st-November 24th. A reception will follow.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents "We're Watching...Are You?" at 9:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Watch the second presidential debate with a town hall meeting format, involving questions posed by audience members. Bring your own questions for the candidates and have a chance to win a prize.

Wednesday, October 8th
The John Hope Franklin Center presents Wednesdays at the Center: "George Washington Williams: The Case of a Neglected American Hero", a conversation led by Lea Fridman from 12:00-1:00 pm in John Hope Franklin Center 240. An African American historian and legislator, George Washington Williams played a key role in exposing the horrors of King Leopold's Congo and pioneered the concept of "crimes against humanity."
