Homecoming Weekend 2008
BSA General Body Meeting: Homecoming Pep Rally
We will be having our second general body meeting of the year on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This is your chance to find out what is happening in October with BSA, hear from football players and coaches about the upcoming Homecoming game, and get hype for Homecoming 2008!!!!

First of Firsts: BSA Homecoming Kickoff Party
We will be hosting a party on Thursday, October 16th from 10:00 pm-2:00 am at Club 9 on Ninth Street. Come out as we kick off the first night of one of the biggest weekends in 2008. Celebrate Homecoming with BSA, friends, alumni, and students from area universities. Remember to bring your college ID and $5.00 to get in. Active members will get in FREE!! 

BSA Game Day Celebration
Join BSA and the Duke Football Office on the quad on Saturday, October 18th from 11:00 am-3:00 pm to celebrate the team and get ready for the game. 

Parents and Family Weekend 2008
BSA Pre-Performance Mixer
BSA will host a pre-performance mixer for Karamu's performance of "A Day of Absence" on Friday, October 24th from 5:00-6:00 pm. This will be a time to meet and mingle with leaders of black student groups around campus. Cocktail attire is preferred. Immediately following the mixer, United in Praise (UP) will have a performance in the Duke Gardens' Angle Amphitheatre at 6:00 pm. The Karamu play will occur at 7:30 pm in the Bryan Center Schaeffer Theater with doors opening at 7:00 pm. An encore production will take place on Sunday, October 26th at 1:30 pm in the same location.

BSA Heritage and Hope Dinner
The Heritage and Hope Dinner will take place on Saturday, October 25th from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is an annual dinner held during Parents and Family Weekend to honor the history of diversity at Duke. There will be a keynote speaker and a variety of student performances. Registration is required to attend this year's event. Please be sure to send an e-mail to bmr7@duke.edu with your name and party count (including yourself) to guarantee seating at the dinner. Cocktail attire is preferred.

Michael Steele and Harold Ford Jr. Debate
BSA, in conjunction with DUU and the Hart Leadership Program, will be hosting a debate between Michael Steele (chair of the GOP Action Committee) and Harold Ford Jr. (Chair of the Democratic Leadership Conference) on Wednesday, October 22nd from 7:30-9:00 pm in Page Auditorium. Both African-American officials will be talking about issues relevant to college students today. Be sure to pick up your free ticket at the Box Office. BSA Executive Committee Office Hours
BSA Exec will be having weekly office hours in the BSA Office from 12:00-1:00 pm and from 3:00-4:00 pm on Mondays through Thursdays.

Election 2008
Learn the facts before you cast your vote!! Watch the third and final Presidential Debate from 9:00-10:30 pm. This debate will focus on foreign policy and can be viewed on several television stations.

Do you plan on voting in North Carolina? If so, you can register and vote on campus in the Old Trinity Room in the West Union Building on West Campus beginning on Thursday, October 16th and lasting until Saturday, November 1st.
   
Academic Events
Wednesday, October 15th
The Franklin Humanities Institute presents Wednesdays at the Center: "The House that Toni Built at Random: Contemporary African American Fiction and the Shadows of the Black Arts Movements" from 12:00-1:00 pm in John Hope Franklin Center 240. Dana Williams, English professor at Howard University and FHI-Mellon HBCU fellow, will be lecturing on this interesting topic.

Thursday, October 16th
The Department of Political Science presents the Ella Baker Tour at 4:30 pm in White Lecture Hall. This tour seeks to commemorate and reinvigorate the influence of the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC) by enlisting students and young activists to organize events for a multigenerational, intergenerational dialogue.  This event will be hosted by Frank Stasio from NC Public Radio and appearances by Annie Pearl Avery, Ira Grupper, Efi Nwangaza, Gwen Patton, Al Pertilla, and Theresa El-Amin.
 
Friday, October 17th
The Mary Lou Williams Center presents Soul on Soul: The Life and Music of Mary Lou Williams at 1:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Dr. Tammy Kernodle, Associate Professor of Music at Miami University (Ohio) will discuss the life and music of Ms.Williams in her book Soul on Soul, which tells the story of Williams' musical career and personal life. Global Health Focus: Local and International Disparities
Are you interested in global health and would like to learn more about this subject? If so, you should consider enrolling in the Global Health Focus for the Spring 2009 semester. The deadline for applications is this Friday, October 17th so hurry up and apply if interested. The following four courses are included in this focus:
Global Diseases
International Law and Global Health: This course is taught by a human rights lawyer from South Africa
Journalism and Public Health: This course is taught by a  journalist who covered West Africa for Le Monde for several decades
Global Health Issues: This course looks at health issues in the U.S. South.

9th Annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Conference
This conference will take place on Saturday, November 1st from 10:00 am-5:00 pm here at Duke. The WILD Conference is a one-day leadership program designed specifically for college females. This year's theme, "Making Connections," focuses on how to make the critical connections necessary to become a leader. This conference is a collaboration among Triangle-area colleges and universities. The registration deadline for this conference is Friday, October 24th. A registration fee of $15.00 is required. DukeEngage Information Session
Learn more about DukeEngage programs, including the application process and deadlines during this information session. This week's session will take place on Wednesday, October 15th from 4:00-5:00 pm in McClendon Commons in the Undergraduate Admissions Office on Campus Drive.

School Days
Help steer an 8th grader to aim for college! These students are selected by their teachers and counselors because they do not have any family members who have gone to college. Paired with another Duke student and a staff member, you will meet and walk with a group of 10 8th graders visiting from Durham middle schools on Thursday, October 23rd at 9:45 am or at 11:00 am. Wednesday, October 15th
Take a break from your busy schedule at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center and enjoy live performances by local musicians as well as Duke music students and special guest artists brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided with the option of purchasing late night fare and drinks in the Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift.

Friday, October 17th
Campus Council presents a Homecoming Pep Rally from 4:00-7:30 pm on Main Quad on West Campus. Enjoy live music, activities, free t-shirts and free Cookout while celebrating Homecoming 2008. 

NPHC presents the 2008 NPHC Homecoming Step Show at 8:00 pm in Page Auditorium. The Step Show After Party will take place in Great Hall after the show. Tickets can be purchased for $10.00 at the Box Office or for $12.00 at the door.  Tickets can also be purchased online at http://tickets.duke.edu/.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents Round Midnight at 10:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Enjoy late night jazz and R&B with a guest artist. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

Saturday, October 18th
The Mary Lou Williams Center presents its 25th Anniversary Gala from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Von Canon rooms in the Bryan Center. This evening recognizes the 25th anniversary of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture and will include a dinner celebration. Tickets cost $50.00 for the public and $25.00 for students.

President Brodhead's Homecoming Dance will take place from 9:00 pm-1:00 am in Wilson Gym. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks while enjoying live bands and performances throughout the night.

Cultural Events
"Diego and Me: Hendricks on Velazquez"
DUU presents "Diego and Me: Hendricks on Velazquez" on Thursday, October 16th from 7:30-8:30 pm at the Nasher Museum of Art. American artist Barkley L. Hendricks talks about drawing inspiration for his own work from the Spanish old master, whose work is currently on view at the Nasher.

University/Cultural Fund Proposals
Are you a member of an undergraduate student organization with an OSAF fund code that would like to receive funding for Spring 2009 events? If so, apply for funding through the University/Cultural Fund. These applications are due on Monday, November 17th at 5:00 pm. In order to be eligible to receive funding, the member(s) of your organization drafting the proposal must attend one mandatory information meeting.  These meetings will occur on the following dates:
Tuesday, October 21st from 2:00-3:00 pm
Monday, October 27th from 3:00-4:00 pm
Wednesday, October 29th from 4:00-5:00 pm
