BSA Announcements
The Black Student Alliance would like to thank everyone who helped to make this year's BSAI Weekend a success!

On Monday, March 31st at 7:00 pm, BSA is sponsoring a lecture by Dr. Keith Jennings, our major speaker for this school year. Dr. Keith Jennings is a human rights and democracy expert. He currently serves as founder and President of the African American Human Rights Foundation, a United States-based non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of international human rights standards. His talk on African-American civic participation will be followed by a student-led question and answer panel. The Foundation functions as a strategic communications center and campaign clearinghouse on global human rights issues for the African American community in the United States. The Foundation is especially focused on human rights abuses affecting people of African descent in the Americas. **Refreshments will be served immediately following the lecture**

The Outreach Committee is returning to Crest Street Community Park this Saturday! Transportation will be provided from West Campus to the Park at 9:30 am. Come out and help clean up BSA's adopted park!

March 31 - April 4 is DeltAIDS Week! DeltAIDS is an organization that began in 2006 as a collaborative effort between Delta Tau Delta, Delta Delta, Delta, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to improve HIV/AIDS awareness on Duke's campus and raise charitable donations for international, national, local, and university HIV/AIDS related causes. Programming for this week includes:

Monday 3/31: Free HIV testing with Know Your Status in the Bryan Center 10 am - 5 pm. Coupons for discounts on tshirts for people who get tested

Wednesday 4/2: Free screening of Rent in the McLendon media room 9 pm - 11 pm

The “Me Too” Campaign seeks to call attention to, and begin to dispel, the myth of effortless perfection at Duke – that is, the perception that all other students are free from struggle – by presenting student strengths and weaknesses as natural and acceptable. OSAF Crash Courses are designed to give participants a quick education about a particular topic presented by an array of instructors. By definition, Crash Courses are short, lasting no more than 2-3 hours on a particular evening. Crash Courses are designed to be completed in one session; participants need not attend follow-up sessions to complete any given course. Keep the Conversation Going: King Downing and the Jena Six at 7:00 pm at White Lecture Hall. King Downing is the National Coordinator of the ACLU's Campaign against Racial Profiling. Downing will be coming to Duke to share his experiences assisting the families of the Jena Six as well as his personal encounters with racial profiling. In addition, he will discuss the ACLU’s major initiatives in public education, legislation and litigation to end discriminatory police stops and searches. This series is being held in collaboration with AAAS199 - The Culture and Politics of Soul Music taught by Dr. Mark Anthony Neal. This film series examines Soul, not simply as a musical genre, but as a cultural phenomenon within America from the late 1950s until the beginning of the late 1980s.

It's that time again!! Duke Student Governenment will be honoring our employees with the 2nd Annual Duke Excellence Team Awards. All Duke students, faculty, administrators, and staff are asked to nominate NON-FACULTY employees at Duke. Eligible nominees include you favorite housekeepers, Marketplace workers, secretaries, administrators, OSAF staff, bus drivers, deans, etc. All the nominees (and YOU the nominator) will be honored at a special banquet later on. The Duke South Asian Studies Committee is in the process of writing a report on the state of South Asian studies at Duke. The goal of the Committee is to evaluate Duke's South Asian studies course offerings and offer suggestions for curricular changes in the future. The Omicron Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. presents Power Hour: Women's Self-Defense Skills and Strategies at 7:30 pm in Von Canon B, Lower Level of the Bryan Center. Do you know what your best options are for safety when faced with an assault? This one-hour workshop will identify and develop your options for safety in potentially dangerous situations. The professionals from SafeSkills will demonstrate simple skills, strategies and concepts that everyone can use. Bring your questions to find out how you can improve your everyday personal safety.

On the Reel: Culture and Politics of Soul Film Series presents "Claudine" at 7:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This series is being held in collaboration with AAAS199 - The Culture and Politics of Soul Music taught by Dr. Mark Anthony Neal. This film series examines Soul, not simply as a musical genre, but as a cultural phenomenon within America from the late 1950s until the beginning of the late 1980s.

Wednesday, March 5
Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Julian Abele Hall, Mary Lou Williams Center. Enjoy live performances by local musicians as well as Duke music students, with special guest artists all brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program. Light hors d'oeuvres and liquid refreshment will be provided with the option to enjoy late night fare and drinks in the Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift.

Thursday, March 6
Duke NAACP presents "Money Matters: Mo' Money without the Problems" as 6:30 pm in Old Chemistry Building, Room 116. Come out to learn more about financial management skills and how to successfully deal with student debt. This financial literacy workshop will be administered by the NC Institute for Minority Economic Development (NCIMED).
