This six-week celebration honors what would have been Thelonious Monk's 90th birthday (October 10). From mid-September through October, artists from all over America will descend on Durham, recalling the visionary composer's influence and unveiling music and performances that Monk's innovations have inspired. Duke's Only Black literary and arts journal, Prometheus Black, is now accepting submissions of poetry, short fiction, photography, and essays on Black culture. This film captures the compassion and militancy of the Young Lords as they implemented their own health, educational, and public assistance programs in their Puerto Rican, Latino, and African-American communities, and fought back against social injustice. The Department of African & African American Studies presents "A Conversation with Davarian Baldwin" at 4:30 pm in Science Building, Room 107 (East Campus). Author of Chicago's New Negroes: Modernity, the Great Migration, and Black Urban Life, Professor Baldwin's reasearch interests include intellectual and mass culture, Black radical thought and transnational social movements, race, space, and urban culture, competing conceptions of modernity, political economy and heritage tourism.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents "Jazz Matters" at 5:30 pm in the Julian Abele Hall. Join us for a scintillating conversation with pianist Jason Moran as he reflects on contemporary jazz matters.

The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presents the Black Faculty Mixer at 7:oo pm in the Multicultural Center (Lower Level, Bryan Center). Come out and meet Black faculty members from various departments on Duke's campus and gain valuable information while networking among Duke's distinguished faculty.

The Duke Chapter of NAACP presents "R.I.P. N-Word: A Dialogue on the History and Legacy of the Word" at 7:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This summer the NAACP buried the N-word. Is it dead to you? Come join us for an open dialogue on the use of the N-word and its impact on society.

Novelist Yvette Christiansë presents a reading from her novel, Uncofessed at 4:30 pm in the Rare Book Room, Perkins Library. Yvette Christiansë is Associate Professosr of English and Comparative Literature at Fordham University and is a finalist for the 2007 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for a Distinguished First Book of Fiction. She will also conduct a pair of creative writing workshops for Duke undergraduate students. In the wake of Argentina's dramatic economic collapse in 2001, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. This Thursday, BSA, the Center for Race Relations, National Pan-Hellenic Council, NAACP, Duke ACLU, and a host of other groups will be taking a university-wide stand against the injustices against the Jena 6. We ask you that you please join us THIS THURSDAY IN WEARING BLACK in symbolic protest of the injustices that were done to these six students. We are also asking that you stop by the BC Plaza Thursday (anytime from 11-4) to sign our petition to Louisiana officials, get more information, and see what you can do to help the Jena 6. BSA Announcements

The Black Student Alliance would like to thank everyone who attended our Hip Hop Party on August 24 in Brodie Gym! Over 500 people attended! The *first general body meeting* will be on *Sunday, September 9, 2007* at 7:30pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. At the first general body meeting, the executive committee will offer a glimpse of the events scheduled for this year. Students will also be able to sign up for various committees. In order to be an active member of the Black Student Alliance, you must sign up for a committee.The first general body meeting is a great opportunity to get involved.

If you are a freshman and would like to serve as freshmen representative on the BSA executive committee, please email vbd@duke.edu for an application. Applications are due September 10.

Monday, September 3
Minority Association of Pre-med Students (MAPS) General Body Meeting at 8:00 pm in the Upper East Side of the Marketplace. Anyone who is pre-med is invited to come and become a part of an organization dedicated to informing members about what they can do to prepare themselves for medical school.

Duke Investment Club Informational Meeting at 8:00 pm in Love Auditorium, LSRC. The Duke Investment Club is a great way to meet people, have fun, and learn about the stock market. No investing experience or knowledge is required.

Tuesday, September 4
JPMorgan Investment Bank Networking Event at 5:00 pm at the Washington Duke Inn, Ambassador Duke Room. This event is for undergraduate students seeking full-time or summer positions in Sales & Trading or Investment Banking.

The Iota Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. presents Black Men's Forum at 7:00 pm in Gilber-Addoms (GA) Down Under. This is an opportunity for first-year students to meet Black upperclassmen and ask candid questions about life at Duke as a Black man.

Wednesday, September 5
The Iota Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. presents Minorities on Wall Street Workshop at 6:oo pm in Von Canon, Lower Level of Bryan Center. The goal of the program is to provide minorities with exposure to the top firms on Wall Street through informational presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

Dance Black Info Session at 7:00 pm in Bell Tower 113, East Campus. This session is for everyone interested in joining Dance Black this year. DB's first practice will be Saturday, September 8th in Wilson Gym from 10 am to 1 pm.

Thursday, September 6
Africana Mentoring Program (AMP) presents Mentoring on the Move at 6:30 pm in Von Canon, Lower Level of Bryan Center. This is the first freshmen/upper-classmen mixer of the year and is only open to people who have completed the mentee or mentor application by 11:59 pm on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd. Friday, September 7
LDOC Committee Chair Applications are due. The application is available on the DUU Website (http://www.union.duke.edu/) and at the OSAF reception desk.
