BSA Programs
On Wednesday, October 22nd, BSA and DUU are bringing Harold Ford Jr. and Michael Steele to campus for a debate-style discussion. Ford Jr. is the chair of the Democratic Leadership Conference and Steele chaired this year's Republican National Convention. We are looking for questions to pose to both speakers during this debate.  If you have any relevant questions, please send them to DukeBSAPresident@gmail.com

Interested in academics at Duke?? Duke's Presidential and University Committees, formed by President Brodhead and other members of the administration, are critical to informing University policy. Students on these committees have significant influence and are responsible for representing the concerns of all undergraduates. Seven committees currently require undergraduate representation. Tuesday, September 20th: WISER hosts liveWISER Benefit Concert from 7:00-9:00 pm in Page Auditorium. Join the premier performance groups on campus for a live show in Page Auditorium.  Tickets can be purchased from $5 on the Bryan Center Plaza or at the DU Box Office. Ticket sales will directly fund girls' scholarships.

Saturday, October 4th
The Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presents AKAs Walk to Cure Lupus from 9:00-11:00 am at Lake Lynn Park in Raleigh, NC. They are joining the Alliance for Lupus Research for this annual 5K walk. Registration begins at 9:00 am and the walk begins at 10:00 am. They will be tabling this week on the Bryan Center Plaza and in the Marketplace to raise money to donate. Greek Week 2008
Come out and celebrate Greek life at Duke with the following events:
Monday, September 28th: Eat on campus at Armadillo Grill and McDonalds and help raise money for Habitat for Humanity. A percentage of the profits will go straight to the organization.
Tuesday, September 29th: Eat at Noodles & Company from 5:00-9:00 pm, mention the fundraiser, and have 25% of the profits go directly to Habitat for Humanity.
Wednesday, October 1st: Head to the Dillo at 8:30 pm for the Order of Omega Greek Bowl. Answer trivia questions and enjoy chips and queso.
Saturday, October 4th: Come and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. There will be two shifts: from 8:00 am-12:00 pm and from 1:00-4:30 pm. Meet at the West Campus bus stop to participate.

Wednesday, October 2nd
Take a break from your hectic schedule to enjoy some live jazz music at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Local musicians, Duke music students, and special guest artists are brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program, for this weekly event. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided with the option of purchasing late night fare and drinks in the Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift.

Friday, October 3rd
IMPACT presents IMPACT Game Night from 9:30 pm-12:00 am in Bell Tower 1st Floor Media Room. Join IMPACT for some of your favorite board and card games including Taboo, Apples to Apples, and Spades. Enjoy some free snacks and treats and good times at this event.

The International Association presents Food Fest 2008 from 4:00-7:00 pm on the Bryan Center Plaza. Join the International Association for this cultural extravaganza. Many student groups will be representing their countries with a spectacular variety of cuisine and performances from around the world. This is your chance to enjoy free international food and get one of 400 free t-shirts. There will be live music and performances in addition to a Super Hott Wing Eating Contest sponsored by Chai's. The Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy presents Sanford Lecture: Thomas Friedman from 5:30-7:00 pm.  New York Times columnist and Pulitizer-Prize winning author Thomas Friedman delivers the 2008 Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture. Friedman will discuss his new book Hot, Flat and Crowded on clean energy technology breakthroughs needed to address the energy and climate. "La Gala de Oro"
The Nasher Student Advisory Board, Mi Gente, and Duke Univesity Union Special Projects Committee present "La Gala de Oro" on Wednesday, September 24th from 8:00 pm-12:00 am at the Nasher Museum of Art. Dress to impress and celebrate the Golden Age of Spain with this elegant Duke student event. Duke undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional students are invited to an evening filled with Spanish-themed refreshments and live entertainment. North Carolina Pride Festival and Parade
The Center for LGBT Life presents North Carolina's largest LGBT pride celebration on Saturday, September 27th from 10:00 am-2:00 pm on East Campus Main Quad. The parade begins at 1:00 pm.

MLWC Black Artist Collective Database
Are you a filmmaker/videographer, photographer, visual/fine artist, writer, dancer, actor/actress, musician, poet, and/or a vocalist? If so, join the MLWC Black Artist Collective Database. "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III"
This exhibition will be held at the Nasher Museum of Art until November 9th. This exhibit is the first to display works from El Greco and Velazquez in context with other accomplished painters of their time.

"Charles Ethan Porter: African-American Still Life Artist"
This exhibition will be held in the North Carolina Central University Art Museum on Lawson Street until November 2nd. Over 50 of Porter's still life oil paintings will be on display. For more information, please call 919.530.6211.

If you're considering study abroad, this is where it all begins.

The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Africana Mentoring Program (AMP), and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) present the Black Faculty Mixer from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Come out and network with black faculty on campus. Build relationships, get advice, and take advantage of what all these amazing professors and administrators have to offer. Come out and hear about exciting events NAACP has planned for this year, share your ideas, become a member of the chapter, or just check NAACP out.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) presents "The Mis-Education of the Black Greek" from 2:00-6:00 pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. Come out to this interactive session to discuss the history of black Greek-letter organizations and the impact they have had on society with Attorney Rasheed-Ali Cromwell of Harbor Institute.

The Pratt School of Engineering and the Career Center present TechConnect 2008 from 6:30-9:30 pm in Fitzpatrick Center Schiciano Auditorium. Industry representatives will be on hand to meet with engineering and computer science students to chat about industry opportunities, career paths and the job market. The question-and-answer panel session will be held in Schiciano Auditorium, followed by a networking session located throughout the Fitzpatrick Center and Atrium. The Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presents AKAerobics: Yoga and Pilates with the AKAs from 7:oo-9:00 pm in Bivins 210 on East Campus. As students, we're often so consumed with schoolwork that we lose focus on our physical health. Join the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for a workout session with fitness instructor Denise Worden. Participants are encouraged to bring towels. Water and healthy snacks will be provided. This is an opportunity to encourage fitness while also providing the chance to relieve some stress.

Cimarron Latin Night will take place from 10:00 pm-2:00 am every third Friday at Club 9 on Ninth Street. The hottest Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton, and Bachata music will be playing all night with free salsa lessons at 10:00 pm. "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III"
This exhibition will be held at the Nasher Museum of Art until November 9th. This exhibit is the first to display works from El Greco and Velazquez in context with other accomplished painters of their time

"Charles Ethan Porter: African American Still Life Artist"
This exhibition will be held in the North Carolina Central University Art Museum on Lawson Street until November 2nd. Over 50 of Porter's still life oil paintings will be on display. For more information, call 919.530.6211.

BSA Programs
It's almost here!! BSA will be having its first general body meeting of the year on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00 pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. Come see what we've been working on during the summer and all of the activities we have planned for the upcoming school year.

The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Roc the Vote at 7:30 pm in OSAF. Come to the first event of this mini series spotlighting this year's election. An open meet and greet will be followed by candidate introductions.

Wednesday, September 10th
The Multicultural Center is hosting its first "MCC Chat" of the year in the Multicultural Center from 5:00-6:30 pm.  "MCC Chats" is a biweekly dinner discussion series exploring racial identity, relationships, community engagement, navigating academics, family dynamics, and more in a relaxed and fun environment. This is your chance to have meaningful and stimulating conversation about issues you care about while learning something new.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be having its first general body meeting at 6:30 pm with the location TBA. Come learn about NSBE initiatives for the year and how you can become involved. And remember, you DO NOT have to be an engineer to be in NSBE.

The lab of Dr. Laura Richman is performing a study on health outcomes geared toward African-American females. "In the Continuum"
The PlayMakers Repertory Company at UNC-Chapel Hill is showing "In the Continuum," the story of two black women-one in South Central Los Angeles and the other in Harare, Zimbabwe-and how their simultaneous HIV diagnoses bring the international AIDS epidemic down to very human terms. The show will be followed by an audience-panel discussion. Show times begin at 8:00 pm and will occur nightly from September 10th-14th and at 2:00 pm on September 14th.
