BSA Programs
Talking Drum magazine will be having its first meeting on Tuesday, September 16th at 8:00 pm in the BSA Office (located in OSAF in the Bryan Center). Those interested in writing, photography, and/or layout at any level of commitment are encouraged to come. We will be discussing Talking Drum's role as a BSA publication as well as planning for the Homecoming issue. Only one week to go!!! The Black Student Alliance will be hosting its first general body meeting on Tuesday, September 23nd at 7:00 pm in Social Sciences Room 139. This is your chance to learn about everything we have planned for BSA this year as well as ways you can present your ideas and get involved.

BSA office hours will be held from 12:00-1:oo pm and from 3:00-4:00 pm on Mondays through Thursdays.  Feel free to stop by during these times to discuss BSA with members of BSA Executive Committee.

Monday, September 15th
Duke Student Government (DSG) will be having a referendum regarding the reformed student activities fee increase proposal throughout the day. To learn more about the proposed changes and to place your vote, please visit http://dsg.duke.edu.

Tuesday, September 16th
The Duke University Office of Study Abroad hosts the Duke Study Abroad Fair from 11:30 am-3:30 pm in the Schaefer Mall in the Bryan Center. Come talk with students, faculty, and program representatives associated with Duke and Duke-approved study abroad programs for undergraduates. If you're considering study abroad, this is where it all begins.

The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Africana Mentoring Program (AMP), and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) present the Black Faculty Mixer from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Come out and network with black faculty on campus. Build relationships, get advice, and take advantage of what all these amazing professors and administrators have to offer. Business casual attire is preferred.

The Baldwin Scholars will be hosting additional information sessions from 7:00-8:00 pm in Jarvis Commons Room and from 8:00-9:00 pm in Giles Commons Room. Come learn about the Baldwin Scholars program focusing on undergraduate women and leadership.

Thursday, September 18th
The Duke chapter of the NAACP will be hosting its first general body meeting at 6:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. NAACP is committed to cross-cultural respect and the empowerment and success of people of color here at Duke, within the greater Durham area, and across the nation. Come out and hear about exciting events NAACP has planned for this year, share your ideas, become a member of the chapter, or just check NAACP out. 

Saturday, September 20th
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) presents "The Mis-Education of the Black Greek" from 2:00-6:00 pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. Come out to this interactive session to discuss the history of black Greek-letter organizations and the impact they have had on society with Attorney Rasheed-Ali Cromwell of Harbor Institute.
Career Opportunities
Tuesday, September 16th
The Pratt School of Engineering and the Career Center present TechConnect 2008 from 6:30-9:30 pm in Fitzpatrick Center Schiciano Auditorium. Industry representatives will be on hand to meet with engineering and computer science students to chat about industry opportunities, career paths and the job market. The question-and-answer panel session will be held in Schiciano Auditorium, followed by a networking session located throughout the Fitzpatrick Center and Atrium. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

Wednesday, September 17th
The Career Center hosts the 2008 Duke Career Fair from 10:00 am-3:00 pm in the Bryan Center. The Career Fair is a great opportunity whether you're looking for a full-time job after graduation, preparing for your internship search, want to practice your networking skills, or just would like to learn about the variety of companies recruiting at Duke. Employer representatives from many sectors, including business, technology, education, government and non-profit, will be participating in this extensive fair. Remember to bring your resume and wear business casual attire for this amazing networking opportunity. Community Service Events
DukeEngage Information Sessions
Learn more about the DukeEngage programs, including the application process and deadlines during these information sessions.  This week's sessions will be held on Tuesday, September 16th from 10:00-11:00 am and Wednesday, September 17th from 6:00-7:00 pm.  Both of these sessions will be held in McClendon Commons, located in the Undergraduate Admissions Office on Campus Drive.

Social Events
Wednesday, September 17th
Enjoy some live jazz music at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Local musicians, Duke music students and special guest artists are brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program, for this weekly event. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided with the option of purchasing late night fare and drinks in the Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift.

Thursday, September 18th
The Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presents AKAerobics: Yoga and Pilates with the AKAs from 7:oo-9:00 pm in Bivins 210 on East Campus. As students, we're often so consumed with schoolwork that we lose focus on our physical health. Join the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for a workout session with fitness instructor Denise Worden. Participants are encouraged to bring towels. Water and healthy snacks will be provided. This is an opportunity to encourage fitness while also providing the chance to relieve some stress.

Friday, September 19th
Cimarron Latin Night will take place from 10:00 pm-2:00 am every third Friday at Club 9 on Ninth Street. The hottest Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton, and Bachata music will be playing all night with free salsa lessons at 10:00 pm. Door proceeds are donated to support free community programs at Durham-based El Kilombo, a non-profit organization. Cover charge will be $10, but will be $5 with an RSVP. Looking for a space to discuss the dynamics of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and other identity factors at Duke and beyond? If so, then Common Ground is the place for you. The Center for Race Relations is sponsoring Common Ground 2008 during Fall Break from October 11th-October 14th at Camp Caraway. This retreat is a time of intense personal reflection, sustained dialogues, community building, and one of Duke's most promising experiences for undergraduates. Additionally, the program is FREE!!! 21st Annual Bull Durham Blues Festival
The St. Joseph's Historic Foundation, Inc. is hosting the festival from September 18th-September 2oth. Listen to blues artists from across the country as they play in various locations around Durham. "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III"
This exhibition will be held at the Nasher Museum of Art until November 9th. This exhibit is the first to display works from El Greco and Velazquez in context with other accomplished painters of their time

"Charles Ethan Porter: African American Still Life Artist"
This exhibition will be held in the North Carolina Central University Art Museum on Lawson Street until November 2nd. Over 50 of Porter's still life oil paintings will be on display. For more information, call 919.530.6211.
