Academic Events
Tuesday, September 1
Dean Wilson will outline the law school application process and answer questions from 5:45-7:00pm in Social Sciences 139.

The Chronicle, Duke’s independent daily student newspaper, is looking for students interested in news writing, reporting, photography, and online design and layout. No experience is necessary! If you are interested in joining the Chronicle, head out to the info session, where members of The Chronicle will introduce themselves and tell you more about what they do and how you can get involved. If you are an emotional eater, a chronic dieter, or are confused about what to eat and would like to learn about nutrition in a supportive group environment, consider attending Find Your Weigh Out- A Non-Diet Approach to Weight Management. The 4 week class is run by Student Health Dietitians and will teach students how to balance meals and minimize food cravings, respond to hunger without over-doing it, and manage emotions that can lead to overeating. Classes will be held from 4:30-5:30pm on Tuesdays September 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th in the Oasis in Bell Tower on East Campus. Registration is FREE! Tuesday, September 1
There will be a cover letter writing workshop from 1-2pm in Social Sciences 228. The workshop will focus on how to write an effective cover letter for any opportunity that you may be applying for.

Friday, September 4
The career center is sponsoring a Communicating with Employers workshop from 3:00-4:00pm in Flowers 21. Because the job search presents a new challenge for young adults’ communication skills, the workshop will focus on how to locate professional contacts, what to say once they are in front of you, and how to follow up appropriately.

Community Service Events
Monday, August 31
Duke Circle K will have an interest meeting from 7:00-8:00pm in East Union Upper East Side for students interested in community service. Those who attend will learn about Circle K’s local and international community service projects and food will be provided.

Wednesday, September 2
The Girls’ Club Mentoring Group will hold an informational meeting for prospective mentors from 5:30-7:00pm in Social Sciences Building, Room TBD. The meeting will give prospective mentors an opportunity to grow familiar with the group, the group’s mission, and some of the girls involved.

There will be a Big Brothers Big Sisters Info Session from 8:00-9:00pm in GA Down Under. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a service group that matches you with a little sibling who needs a positive role model. FREE t-shirts will be given to those who sign up!

Friday, September 4
Healthy Devils are peer educators at Duke University who focus on promoting a positive campus community that reflects the attitudes, behaviors, and values of a healthy lifestyle.
The Healthy Devil peer education program is recruiting Duke students who are interested in participating in one of four groups: DELISH (Duke Educational Leaders in Sexual Health), ESTEEM (Educating Students to Eliminate Eating Misconceptions), MINDS (Mental Issues and Needs of Duke Students), or STAR (Students for Tobacco and Alcohol Reform). Those interested must apply to the program by completing the online application at
http://healthydevil.studentaffairs.duke.edu/peer_education/, by e-mailing Lindsey Bickers Bock at lindsey.bickers.bock@duke.edu) for an electronic version and submitting the application via email, or by picking up a hard-copy of the application around campus and submitting the completed form to Lindsey Bickers Bock at Duke Student Health or Kevin J. Harrell at the Oasis in Bell Tower on East Campus. Applications are due by Friday, Sept 4 at noon.

Monday, August 31
The Center for Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, and Transgender Life & the East Campus Residence Life and Housing Services Staff are hosting the East Campus Chocolate Fountain Social from 6:00-7:30pm in Trinity Café in the East Union Building. Students are encouraged to attend to learn more about resources and student organizations for LGBT Dukies and those who are looking to learn more or be allies.

Tuesday, September 1
The Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is hosting a social gathering at Armadillo Grill. Be sure to come out to catch up and eat good food on Tuesday, September 1st from 6-8pm!

Duke Men's Crew will host an Information Session from 10:00-11:00pm in East Union Upper East Side. The info session is for first time rowers and will focus on the schedule for the year, regattas, practice expectations, and questions prospective rowers may have.

Tuesday, September 1
Duke Men's Soccer plays James Madison at 7:00pm at Duke .

Women's Club Basketball Traveling Team #1/practice will be held on Tuesday September 1 from 7:30-9:3pm in Wilson gym. Any female Duke student can try out.

Thursday, September 3
Duke Women's Soccer plays UNC Wilmington at 7:00pm at Duke.

Friday, September 4
Duke Men's Soccer vs. N.C. State vs. Denver at 5:00pm at Duke.

Duke Men's Soccer plays Columbia at 7:30pm at Duke.

Saturday, September 5
Duke Football plays its first game of the season against Richmond at 7:00pm at Duke.

Duke Women's Soccer plays UNLV at 1:00pm at Duke.

Sunday, September 6
Duke Men's Soccer plays Denver at 2:30pm at Duke.
