BSA Programs
It's almost here!! BSA will be having its first general body meeting of the year on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00 pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. Come see what we've been working on during the summer and all of the activities we have planned for the upcoming school year.   

BSA Executive Board  will be holding office hours in the BSA Office in OSAF from 12:00-1:00pm and 3:00-4:00pm on Mondays through Thursdays. This is your opportunity to come see our new office, meet the new exec members, and ask questions about BSA.

Academic Events
Monday, September 8th
The Baldwin Scholars are having two information sessions from 7:00-8:00 pm in Brown Commons Room and from 8:00-9:00 pm in Alspaugh Commons Room. Come learn about the Baldwin Scholars program for undergraduate women and leadership.

Tuesday, September 9th
The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Roc the Vote at 7:30 pm in OSAF. Come to the first event of this mini series spotlighting this year's election. An open meet and greet will be followed by candidate introductions.

Wednesday, September 10th
The Multicultural Center is hosting its first "MCC Chat" of the year in the Multicultural Center from 5:00-6:30 pm.  "MCC Chats" is a biweekly dinner discussion series exploring racial identity, relationships, community engagement, navigating academics, family dynamics, and more in a relaxed and fun environment. This is your chance to have meaningful and stimulating conversation about issues you care about while learning something new.

Thursday, September 11th
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be having its first general body meeting at 6:30 pm with the location TBA. Come learn about NSBE initiatives for the year and how you can become involved. And remember, you DO NOT have to be an engineer to be in NSBE. 

Talk to Me: Office Hours with Ms. Guinn
Chandra Guinn, director of the Mary Lou Williams Center, will be holding open office hours on Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the BSA Office in OSAF, Wednesdays at 5:00 pm in the Mary Lou, and Thursdays at 3:00 pm in Crowell Building (East Campus) on the 2nd floor. In addition to these times, Ms. Guinn will be available during Jazz at the Mary Lou and by appointment. This is your chance to talk about anything on your mind.

Psychology research opportunity
The lab of Dr. Laura Richman is performing a study on health outcomes geared toward African-American females. Participants will be paid $20.00 for 1-1.5 hours at the DIISP lab in the Erwin Mill Building (the C-6 shuttle travels to this location). Poverty Awareness Week
Take part in this unified Duke effort to raise awareness of one of today's most important issues. Throughout the week, different organizations will be holding events addressing several aspects of poverty in today's world.

Wednesday, September 10th: Keynote presentation by Marcela Escobari from 7:00-9:00 pm in Reynolds Theater
Thursday, September 11th: DW dinner from 7:00-9:00 pm in McClendon Banquet Room
Friday, September 12th: Awareness concert featuring Stella by Starlight from 5:00-7:00 pm on the Plaza (or in Reynolds Theater if it's raining)

DukeEngage Information Sessions
Learn more about the DukeEngage program, including the application process and deadlines over the next couple of weeks as DukeEngage holds several general information sessions. This week's sessions will occur on Tuesday, September 9th at 11:00 am and on Thursday, September 11th at 4:00 pm in McCLendon Commons located in the Undergraduate Admissions Office on Campus Drive.

Healthy Devils Application
Did you love the Real Deal? Are you interested in health topics and want to have an impact on the Duke community? If this sounds like you, then you should join Healthy Devils! Healthy Devils are peer educators at Duke University who focus on promoting a positive campus community that reflects the attitudes, behaviors and values of a healthy lifestyle. Healthy Devils take part in creating, planning and implementing health awareness weeks/months and programs throughout the Duke Community.

The Duke Community Service Center and the Volunteer Center of Durham will be presenting the Annual Volunteer Fair from 12:00-3:00 pm in the Bryan Center. Learn about volunteer opportunities and meet representatives from dozens of local non-profit agencies as well as Duke Community Service Center umbrella student service group leaders.  

Social Events
Wednesday, September 10th
Take a study break with some live jazz music at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Local musicians, Duke music students and special guest artists are brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program, for this weekly event. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided with the option of purchasing late night fare and drinks in the Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift. 

Friday, September 12th
All Duke students, faculty and staff are welcome to The Oasis Open House from 3:00-6:00 pm in the Oasis (109 Bell Tower Dorm, East Campus). Relax in massage chairs and enjoy free Loco Pops and other giveaways.

Cultural Events
Karamu Auditions
Karamu Drama Group, a multicultural drama group on campus, will be holding auditions on Monday, September 8th and Tuesday, September 9th from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Multicultural Center for this semester's play, "A Day of Absence." Pick up an audition packet and sign up for an audition time slot at the Information Desk in the Bryan Center. Call backs will be held on Wednesday, September 10th.

"In the Continuum"
The PlayMakers Repertory Company at UNC-Chapel Hill is showing "In the Continuum," the story of two black women-one in South Central Los Angeles and the other in Harare, Zimbabwe-and how their simultaneous HIV diagnoses bring the international AIDS epidemic down to very human terms. The show will be followed by an audience-panel discussion. Show times begin at 8:00 pm and will occur nightly from September 10th-14th and at 2:00 pm on September 14th. "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III"
This exhibition will be held at the Nasher Museum of Art until November 9th. This exhibit is the first to display works from El Greco and Velazquez in context with other accomplished painters of their time.

"Charles Ethan Porter: African American Still Life Artist"
This exhibition will be held in the North Carolina Central University Art Museum on Lawson Street until November 2nd. Over 50 of Porter's still life oil painting will be on display.  For more information, call 919.530.6211.
