The Black Student Alliance is proud to announce the 2007-2008 representatives for the President's Council on Black Affairs (PCOBA): Congratulations to Kristina Broadie, Anne Beaubrun, Aria Branch, and Wesley Nute. Campus Announcements
Duke Performances presents Following Monk: Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the N.C. Legend's birthday. This six-week celebration honors what would have been Thelonious Monk's 90th birthday (October 10). From mid-September through October, artists from all over America will descend on Durham, recalling the visionary composer's influence and unveiling music and performances that Monk's innovations have inspired. Duke's Only Black literary and arts journal, Prometheus Black, is now accepting submissions of poetry, short fiction, photography, and essays on Black culture. Please send your submissions to tsj5@duke.edu or drop them off at the Mary Lou Williams Center. Prometheus Black will be accepting submissions until Monday, October 29th. Any women interested in joining the Duke chapter of the National Congress of Black Women are asked to email Kandis Wood at kbw4@duke.edu. Planning has begun for a Black Male Summit (or something like that) which will provide Black men at Duke an opportunity to get off campus and connect with each other in fun and foundational activities to strengthen and encourage them on their journey. Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS) presents Chemistry Study Session at 8:00 pm in Science Building, Rooms 107 and 126 (East Campus). This will be an opportunity to meet with upperclassmen, medical students, and chemistry faculty to ask questions and get advice about Duke chemistry courses. Refreshments will be served.


Tuesday, October 2
The Multicultural Center presents "Identities in Movement" series presents dinner and film showing "Palante Siempre Palante!" at 5:30 pm in the Multicultural Center, Bryan Center. This film captures the compassion and militancy of the Young Lords as they implemented their own health, educational, and public assistance programs in their Puerto Rican, Latino, and African-American communities, and fought back against social injustice. On the Reel: Black Love & Relationships Film Series presents "The Color Purple" at 7:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This series is being held in collaboration with WOMENST150S/AAAS199S - Black Love: Romantic Relationships and the African American Experience taught by Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes. Examine the patterns and functions of relationshps from slavery to the present through film. A brief discussion may follow the viewing. Open to All! Popcorn Provided.

Wednesday, October 3
The Department of African & African American Studies presents "A Conversation with Davarian Baldwin" at 4:30 pm in Science Building, Room 107 (East Campus). Author of Chicago's New Negroes: Modernity, the Great Migration, and Black Urban Life, Professor Baldwin's reasearch interests include intellectual and mass culture, Black radical thought and transnational social movements, race, space, and urban culture, competing conceptions of modernity, political economy and heritage tourism.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents "Jazz Matters" at 5:30 pm in the Julian Abele Hall. Join us for a scintillating conversation with pianist Jason Moran as he reflects on contemporary jazz matters.

Thursday, October 4
The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presents the Black Faculty Mixer at 7:oo pm in the Multicultural Center (Lower Level, Bryan Center). Come out and meet Black faculty members from various departments on Duke's campus and gain valuable information while networking among Duke's distinguished faculty.

The Duke Chapter of NAACP presents "R.I.P. N-Word: A Dialogue on the History and Legacy of the Word" at 7:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This summer the NAACP buried the N-word. Is it dead to you? Come join us for an open dialogue on the use of the N-word and its impact on society.
