Service Opportunities Leadership (SOL) Information Sessions
Looking to be part of an intensive, yearlong, nationally-recognized leadership program from Duke undergraduates that combines academic study, community service, field research, critical reflection, mentoring, and leadership development? Come learn how to get involved in Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL), part of the Hart Leadership Program based at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at their information sessions. Current and former SOL students will share their summer research and leadership experiences and how they have become engaged in the local, national, and international communities. These sessions will be held at the following times:

Monday, October 6th
Duke Human Rights Center presents "Freeing an Empire's Slave" by Adam Hochschild from 5:00-8:00 pm in LSRC B101. Award-winning journalist Hochschild will speak about his recent work on the Abolitionist movement in 19th-century Great Britain. He authored King Leopold's Ghost, the basis for the film featured in this series. The event will be free and followed by a reception.

Tuesday, October 7th
The Mary Lou Williams Center presents MLWC Art, Jazz & "Forrealness": A Dialogue with Visiting Artist in Residence Barkley L. Hendricks led by Professor Richard J. Powell (Art, Art History and Visual Studies). Hendricks, 2008 Visiting Artist-in-Residence, will hold his first public event during his eight-week residency in the Mary Lou Williams Center at 7:00 pm. He will be visiting Duke University from October 1st-November 24th. A reception will follow.

The Mary Lou Williams Center presents "We're Watching...Are You?" at 9:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Watch the second presidential debate with a town hall meeting format, involving questions posed by audience members. Bring your own questions for the candidates and have a chance to win a prize.

Wednesday, October 8th
The John Hope Franklin Center presents Wednesdays at the Center: "George Washington Williams: The Case of a Neglected American Hero", a conversation led by Lea Fridman from 12:00-1:00 pm in John Hope Franklin Center 240. An African American historian and legislator, George Washington Williams played a key role in exposing the horrors of King Leopold's Congo and pioneered the concept of "crimes against humanity."

Friday, October 10th
Today is the last day for professors to report mid-semester grades to the Registrar's Office.

Ms. Guinn will be holding weekly office hours on Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the BSA Office, Wednesdays at 5:00 pm in the Mary Lou, and Thursdays at 3:00 pm in 208 Crowell Building (2nd floor of the Crowell Building on East Campus). No appointment necessary.

Monday, October 6th
The Duke Public Interest Law Foundation sponsors a Charity Denim sale from 10:00 am-5:00 pm in the Bryan Center. Designer denim jeans will be sold at heavily reduced prices with a portion of the proceeds from each pair of jeans funding public interest law fellowships for Duke Law students. Brands include Seven for all Mankind, True Religion, and iJeans.

Tuesday, October 7th
Learn more about DukeEngage programs, including the application process and deadlines during this DukeEngage Information Session. This final session will occur from 4:00-5:00 pm in McClendon Commons in the Undergraduate Admissions Office on Campus Drive.

The Omicron Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. presents Sister's Circle from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Sister's Circl is a bi-monthly meeting of Duke's women of color to have frank and fun dialogues about all things pertinent to our lives. Come curl up on comfy couches with comfort foods while discussing everything from Duke to health to relationships to family to politics to sex...and everything in between. This month's talk will focus on the Palin Effect and what it means for women of color.

Wednesday, October 8th
Take some time to relax and enjoy some live jazz music at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Local musicians, Duke music students, and special guest artists are brought together by John Brown, Director of the Duke Jazz Studies Program, for this weekly event. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided with the option of purchasing late night fare and drinks at Faculty Commons provided by Sage & Swift.

Cultural Events
"MCC Chats"
The Multicultural Center presents "MCC Chats" on Wednesday, October 8th from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Multicultural Center. "MCC Chats" is a biweekly Wednesday dinner discussion series held in the Multicultural Center exploring racial identity, relationships, community engagement, navigating academics, family dynamics and more. Have meaningful conversation on issues you care about.

Don Quixote
The Carolina Ballet is performing Don Quixote with all new choreography at Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina. This program accompanies "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III." The ballet will be occurring on Thursday, October 9th at 8:00 pm, Friday, October 10th at 8:00 pm, and Saturday, October 11th at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm.  For ticket information, call 919.719.0900 or visit www.carolinaballet.com.
