Awards and Achievements
BSA would like to congratulate Aisha Turner on being elected Chair of the Undergraduate Publications Board.

BSA would like to commend Duke Football on their effort against Wake Forest this past Saturday.

BSA Programs
It's finally here. The third issue of Talking Drum will be available beginning Monday, November 3rd in the BSA Office. Read about a range of topics from the election to prominent civil rights leaders. 

BSA will be leading a discussion during the Mary Lou's Election Affection focusing on what Obama owes to black people on Tuesday, November 4th at 7:45 pm. 

Academic Events
Monday, November 3rd
Join George Elliot Clarke in his discussion titled "African-Canadian Literature: What Makes It Unique" from 4:30-6:00 pm in Friedl 225. Clarke is a professor at the University of Toronto and has been instrumental in promoting the work of writers of African descent, especially those of Nova Scotia.

Tuesday, November 4th
The Mary Lou Williams Center presents Election Affection from 10:00 am-midnight in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Watch the 2008 Presidential Election coverage on the big screen and related films (The Great Debaters, Unbought and Unbossed, and Head of State) on the another. There will also be opportunities to participate in a series of conversations on hot election topics. Topics include: "The Faithful Left: Faith, Blackness, and the Liberal Agenda," "What Happens if Obama Wins/Loses: An Examination of the Possibilities," "Beyond Obama: The Opportunity of Other Black Politicians," and "What Does Obama Owe to Black People." 

The Public Policy Studies Major Union presents Election Night Returns Watch from 8:00 pm-12:00 am in Fleishman Commons in Sanford. Watch the Election Night returns with other Duke students and faculty.

Wednesday, November 5th
The Center for Documentary Studies and the Regulator Bookshop present Pitch Blackness book signing with author Hank Willis Thomas at 7:00 pm at the Center for Documentary Studies. Hank Willis Thomas gained wide recognition with his provocative series B(r)anded, which addressed the commodification of African American male identity by raising questions about visual culture and the power of logos. His first book, Pitch Blackness, includes selections from this series and several others. Willis Thomas will give a talk and show work from Pitch Blackness as well as sign books for sale at the event. 

Friday, November 7th
The Duke Human Rights Center presents "Freedom Fighters: Regime Change and U.S. Foreign Policy" in East Duke 204B. The following sessions will take place during this program
9:30-11:00 am: "Empire's Workshop: The New Deal to the New Right, Latin America to Iraq"
11:15 am-1:15 pm: "Openings and Closings: The United States and the Arab World in the 1970s"
2:30-4:30 pm: "Transforming Interventions: U.S. Policy in Colombia, 1998-2008"
4:45-5:30 pm: Closing discussion followed by a reception
Refreshments and lunch will be provided at this event.

Thursday, November 6th
Are you having trouble initiating your job search and need to reevaluate your current strategy? If so, attend the "Fannie Mitchell Expert in Residence: Strategies for Rethinking or Initiating Your Job Search with Jeff Constable" from 5:00-6:00 pm in Flowers 201. Constable will discuss how to develop new strategies and how to locate other avenues to find job opportunities. This workshop will be especially useful for those not interested in or having difficulty with the on-campus recruiting process

Community Service Events
DukeEngage in Trinidad and Tobago
The program "Civic Engagement and Experiential  Learning to Promote Entrepreneurship and Economic Development" will take place from June 1st-August 4th. Students will work with governmental agencies, an emerging college, and locals to focus on poverty in the area. For more information, contact the program leader, visit http://dukeengage.duke.edu.
  
Thursday, November 6th
DukeEngage will be having an information session from 4:00-5:00 pm McClendon Commons in Undergraduate Admissions on Campus Drive. Learn more about DukeEngage programs, including the application process and deadlines during this information session.

Wednesday, November 5th
Relax with live jazz music, light hors d'oeuvres, and beverages at Jazz at the Mary Lou at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Late night fare and drinks can be purchased at the Faculty Commons. 

Friday, November 7th
The Financial Aid Initiative Student Advisory Council hosts a Celebration on the Plaza from 5:00-7:00 pm on the BC Plaza. Free food, drinks, prizes and a DJ will be at the event. President Brodhead will be making a major announcement at 5:30 pm.

Sunday, November 9th
DUU presents Get Your Glo On: Ghostland Observatory with Flosstradamus from 8:00-11:00 pm. Ghostland Observatory is an electronic rock band known for their high-energy live performances and laser light shows. Tickets can be purchased for $16 at the Box Office or online at http://tickets.duke.edu.

Cultural Events
Awaaz 2008--The Office: Dunder Mumbai
Awaaz will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 7th and Saturday, November 8th in Page Auditorium. The show will include singing and dancing acts including performances from Lasya, Raas, Chinese Folk Dance, Dhamaka, Speak of the Devil, and other Bollywood acts. American Teen
Freewater Presentations will be showing American Teen in Griffith Theater throughout the week. The movie will be showing from 7:00-8:00 pm and 9:30-10:30 pm on Thursday, November 6th and Friday, November 7th in Griffith Theater. 

"Blood Done Sign My Name"
Professor Timothy Tyson's best-selling memoir, "Blood Done Sign My Name," has been adapted to a play and will be showing on Saturday, November 8th until Thursday, November 13th at 8:00 pm in Schaefer Theater. The play tells the story of 1970 Oxford, North Carolina and the story of the racially-motivated murder of a 23 year old black U.S. army veteran and the resulting social upheaval. The performance will include a talk-back session with Tim Tyson and two of the characters in the play. Tickets are $10 for students and can be purchased at the Box Office. 

El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III
This exhibit will be closing on Sunday, November 9th so make sure to visit the Nasher Museum of Art if you still haven't seen it! This exhibit is the first to display works from El Greco to Velazquez in context with other accomplished painters of that time.

Monday, November 3rd
The FVD Program and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies present the film "El Colombian Dream" at 7:00 pm in Griffith Theater. The film will be followed by a discussion with the director, Felipe Aljure.

Wednesday, November 5th
The Multicultural Center presents "Beyond the Birds and the Bees" from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Multicultural Center. This is your chance to talk about sexual health and communication in the college sense and real life with a group of interested peers with free food. This discussion is a part of "MCC Chats," a biweekly discussion series. 

Athletics
Wednesday, November 5th
Duke Women's Basketball will play Anderson College at 7:00 pm in Cameron.

Saturday, November 8th
Duke Football will be playing NC State at 3:30 pm in Wallace Wade Stadium.
