BSA Events

Wednesday, October 7

BSA has considerable stake in minority recruitment weekends, as the Black Student Alliance Invitational weekend (BSAI) has been held every spring since the 1980s to recruit black high school seniors from around the country to Duke University. Because conversations are being held around the University about minority recruitment weekends and their efficacy, we are interested in promptly communicating your opinions on these matters to the administration, Admissions, other student groups, and the student body at large. Therefore, BSA will hold a very import forum on the issue at hand. So whether you came to BSAI, host every year, didn't come, weren't invited, or aren't even sure what it is yet -- please come out to the Mary Lou Williams Center at 6pm to contribute your ideas about Duke's strategy for minority recruitment.

Academic Events

Wednesday, October 7

There is an open position on the DPSSA executive board for which applications are now being accepted. The process is very straight-forward and should not take much time, so if you are interested in getting involved in political science at Duke, you are encouraged to apply. The applications should be attached documents and emailed to Michael Krekel, President of DPSSA, by 11:59pm. 15-minute interviews will be conducted on Sunday, October 11, and interview time slots will be determined once applications have been received. The following information is requested in the applications:
1) Name
2) Class (i.e. Freshman, Sophomore, etc.)
3) Major/Anticipated Major
4) Political Science courses taken at Duke
5) A brief personal statement. This should be no more than two paragraphs. The
statement should give us some insight into why you are interested in joining
the executive board and what you will add to the organization (ideas, skills,
attributes, etc.). Basically, why are you qualified for and interested in
executive board membership? Feel free to be creative with these statements.

Think college is hard? Imagine your future without it. These days, students make choices by the end of 8th grade that can determine their future. Many children, especially those from families without college backgrounds, don’t elect college track courses. And once in high school, it’s very hard to switch to the college-bound group. On Friday, October 16, over 300 such 8th graders are coming to Duke’s campus, and YOUR help is need to show them the campus from a college student’s point of view. You don’t need to know Duke history or statistics; all you need is an inside perspective on college life. Duke student guides will join small teams of middle schoolers accompanied by a Duke staff and a teacher. Guides are asked to arrive at Reynolds Theater no later than 9:30am on October 16, 2009. Volunteers can leave as early as 11:30am, or stay for a free lunch. Sign up via the online form at <http://survey.oit.duke.edu/ViewsFlash/servlet/vfauth?cmd=showform&pollid=sdays!student_reg_09> (you will need your NetID and password for access. And note: you must cut & paste the link into Internet Explorer). Please register by Monday, October 12. Contact Stacey Craig with questions or for more information, at Stacey.craig@duke.edu or 668-1033.

The Center for Race Relations is asking for YOUR help. Me Too Monologues, a monologues show about race at Duke, are being brought back for the last weekend of February. Students are being asked to help bring this show to LIFE by submitting monologues of personal experiences on race and culture. They can be of all lengths, themes, styles. Short paragraphs, longer stories, poetry have all been put on. Past monologues have dealt with issues abroad, blatant racism, racial identity, Greek life, interracial dating, being a woman of color… everything! All stories will be kept strictly confidential, and writers will not have to perform their own monologues. The Center for Race Relations is also looking for actors who are interested in performing. The show will be held on a Saturday, February 27th at 7 PM, and rehearsal will begin in November. Because these monologues deal with issues of race, we encourage students of all backgrounds to audition. Monologue Submissions are due by October 16 and tryouts will be held on October 17th and 18th. Email metoomonologues@gmail.com to sign up for auditions or submit a monologue.

This will be a one hour mini-performance, and admission is only $1! RSVP at 560-3040 x 236 (Monday-Friday 11am-6pm only) OR at Sherrica@carolinatheatre.org There will also be Ailey II Public Shows on Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9 at 8pm. Student tickets are $20 with ID.

Diane Reeves is the most commanding jazz vocalist on earth: her creamy, shattering contralto has a "skyscraper authority" (New York Times) that was shaped by Sergio Mendes and Harry Belafonte but breathes the sultry gospel-blues of Mahalia Jackson. Here, the Detroit-born legend appears with two ace guitarists - Georgia native Malone and Lubambo, from Rio, who is "the best practitioner of his craft in the world today" (Jazziz). The show will take place in Page Auditorium from 8:00-10:00pm, and the cost is only $5 for Duke students.

Saturday, October 10

The Hallelujah Train, featuring Pastor Brady Blade, Sr., Daniel Lanois, Brian Blade, Brady Blade, Jr., Greg Leisz, Buddy Miller, Chris Thomas, and Ada Small, is coming to the Durham area. Brian Blade is "the most imaginatively supple drummer in jazz" (New York Times). He learned his trade hitting rhythm at Shreveport's Zion Baptist, where his father - the spine-shaking Pastor Brady Blade, Sr. - presides. In New Orleans, Brian partnered with Lanois (producer of U2 & Bob Dylan) to devise a gospel project that culminates here. In this once-in-a-lifetime event, the drummer, the producer, and the drummer's father convene in Durham to cut a live album driven by Pastor Blade. They're joined by bus-fulls of churchgoers from Shreveport and the sharpest sidemen in the business. On Saturday night from 8:00-10:00pm there's a live recording; on Sunday morning a sermon by Pastor Blade; and on Sunday evening, another live performance. All of it unfolds at Hayti Heritage Center, once an A.M.E church and now a deconsecrated chapel whose Jim Crow-era walls create acoustics better than any studio's. The cost is only $5 for Duke Students, and $26 for non-Duke students.
