BSA Events

Applications to be a candidate in the upcoming elections are due on Friday, Feb 19th at 5pm! We encourage everyone interested in running to attend our Executive Committee Meeting this Wednesday at 6:30pm, location TBA soon. Come participate in BSA leadership at work firsthand. We will also discussing the concerns that were submitted to us at the last General Body meeting. Food will be provided.

Saturday, February 20th
In commemoration of Black History Month, BSA would like its members to come out and help paint the East Campus bridge black. We will be meeting at 1pm and would like members to come dressed appropriately and ready to help. Refreshments will be available. Additionally, we would like to place a quote on the painted walls. So please send any suggestions of a short phrase or quote relevant to Black History or uplifting the black community to DukeBSAProgramming@gmail.com and itjust might get chosen!


Academic Events

Monday, February 15

Interested in finding a summer internship but don't know where to start? Come to the Career Center's new Internship Spotlight Series to hear students speak about their past summer experiences and learn about exciting internship possibilities! Each week a new industry will be highlighted - from technology to human rights and everything in between. The series will be an informal opportunity to talk personally to students who have recently done internships in various fields, working for IBM and ABC, non-profit organizations and top universities. Events are open to all undergraduates, and there is no need to sign-up beforehand. The event will be held in the Mary Lou Williams Center from 5:00-6:00pm.


Wednesday, February 17

Sophomores, head out to the Sophomore Luncheon from 12:00-1:00pm in West Union Faculty Lounge Conference Room, where you will be given the opportunity to connect with the Director of Career Services as well as a faculty member (Special Guest: Dean Sue). Lunch will be provided in the faculty lounge of the faculty commons. Past topics of conversation have included: finding the right internship and Duke's history. The Undergraduate Conduct Board (UCB) is a pool of students, faculty and staff who are selected/appointed to hear referred cases of potential violations of university policy. Applications are now being accepted for the 2010-11 academic year. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at Duke University who are rising juniors or seniors (classes of 2011 or 2012). Applicants may study abroad for either the fall or spring semester of the 2010-2011 academic year, but not both. An informal information session will be held from 6:00-7:00pm in Languages 312, but is NOT required for application.

Duke Venture Forward is proud to present David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications, from 1:00-2:00pm in Fitzpatrick Center Schiciano Auditorium. He will be delivering a speech titled: Succeeding in Today's New Global Media Environment. The discussion will include the current state of the media industry, the impact of social networking on media, and how to break in to and succeed in the media business. Mark your calendar from 1-2:30 in Schiciano on Thursday, February 18th. The Prebusiness Advising Office will be hosting a GMAT practice session from 10:00am-12:00pm in Bostock Library 023. This is an excellent opportunity for students to assess their strength on various areas of the GMAT test and to implement any necessary study strategies for improvement. Sunday, February 21

Co-taught by the Women's Center and Duke Police, there will be a 2-hour Self Protection Workshop designed to empower women with strategies they can use that may reduce risk of sexual assault to themselves or to a friend. This workshop focuses the most common methodology that campus perpetrators use to target potential victims. In this workshop, participants learn the latest research about predatory men, higher risk situations, and verbal and physical strategies they can use to reduce their chance of being victimized. This workshop encourages participants to create a supportive culture for victims of sexual assault. The workshop will be held in the Women’s Center from 2:00-4:00pm.

Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture and Minority Association for Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) is sponsoring Spotlight on Health: Career Talks from 3:00-5:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Health care professionals will discuss their career path with students who express interest in pursuing the same profession. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and seek suggestions on internships.

This year's Sustainable Business and Social Impact Conference, held all day in the Fuqua School of Business, will educate and inspire you to examine the roles that sustainability and social responsibility can play in your professional endeavors, regardless of industry sector or function. Join us as we hear practitioners on the frontlines discuss the issues most relevant to creating environmental and social impact and how they are working across sectors to make it happen. Explore a variety of topics through a mix of keynote addresses, thought-provoking panels and networking sessions.

Nicholas School students are responding to the ongoing Haiti crisis with a fundraiser. The fundraiser has three components, a student staffed booth at the Nicholas School, a formal presentation on Thurs. Feb. 18, and photo exhibit with live music at Copa Vida Coffee Shop in Durham, on Thurs. Please click on More Info for full details. One hundred percent of the sales will go to Partners In Health. The event is jointly sponsored by Copa Vida Coffee Shop, Barrington Coffee Roasting Company, and the Nicholas School of the Environment.

Monday, February 15

The Multicultural Center is holding an event entitled, "Duke in Context: The Role of Diversity in Higher Education" on Monday, at 5:30 pm in the MCC located in the lower level of the Bryan Center, as part of its Minorities in Higher Education Series. We will provide food and engage in an active discussion about the meaning of diversity in regards to the minority experience on campuses such as Duke, answering questions such as: Are minority students here to educate others on campus about their diverse cultures? Does their presence in institutions and positions of power mean that minorities have overcome inequality? Does diversity address or cover up inequalities? Be prepared for an engaging and enlightening discussion on these questions and more at the MCC. See you Monday!


Wednesday, February 17

Head out to Wednesdays at the Center- Notes on Citizenship and Belonging: Afro-Cubans in the U.S. Discuss Race in Las Americas. This talk is presented by the Program in Latino/a Studies & the Global South, where Monika Gosin is currently Postdoctoral Associate. Drawing on testimonials from Afro-Cuban immigrants in Los Angeles and Miami, this talk shows how their experience complicates the Black/White binary and reveals the links between the racialization of Cubans and that of other immigrant and minority groups seeking a space of belonging in the U.S. Wednesdays at the Center is a topical weekly noontime series in which distinguished scholars, artists, and journalists speak informally about their work in conversation with the audience. All events in the series are open to the public and a light lunch is served; no reservation is necessary. The series is presented by the Franklin Humanities Institute and John Hope Franklin Center with other campus partners.


Thursday, February 18
