BSA Announcements
Attention BSA General Body! BSA and the Career Center still want to hear from you! We want to know what's working and what's not in regards to preparing you for life beyond Duke. We know it's only October, but it won't be too long before we are saying goodbye to the Class of 2008!! We are looking for creative, motivated, and outgoing upperclassmen to help the Black Student Alliance send off the senior class in the right way. The FINAL HONORS CHAIRPERSON will work closely with BSA Exec in the creation, preparation, and implementation of Duke's BEST commencement program. Interested? For applications please email Vanecie (vbd@duke.edu). Applications must be submitted electronically to Vanecie no later than 9:00 pm on Monday, October 22, 2007. No late applications will be accepted. Strong candidates will be invited to interviews.

INROADS is the nation's largest non-profit source of salaried, summer corporate internships for talented students of color. Students participate in these internships for 2-4 summers during college and earn $10-$25/hr. Most of them receive offers for full-time positions, upon graduation. Tuesday, October 23
Race and Wealth Symposium at 9:00 am in the Rhodes Conference Room, Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy. Presented by the Duke University Research Network for Racial and Ethnic Inequality, this day-long symposium features panels about the current situation of race and wealth, reparations, and education. There is a registration fee of $10 for the public and $5 for students. For more information, please contact jackie.terrell@duke.edu

Durham Mayoral Forum at 6:30 pm in Page Auditorium, West Campus. Want to learn more about Durham politics? The Duke College Republicans and Duke Democrats are collaborarting to put together Duke's first-ever campus mayoral forum between incumbent Mayor Bill Bell and challenger City Councilman Thomas Stith. The candidates will be discussing their approaches to targeting crime and Duke-Durham relations, among other issues.

WISER Benefit Concert at 7:00 pm in Reynold's Theatre, Bryan Center. Featuring performances from The Pitchforks, defMo, Out of the Blue, Dance Black, Deja Blue, Dance Slam, Something Borrowed Something Blue, and Inside Joke. Tickets are $5 in advance (on the BC Plaza) and $7 at the door. All proceeds are going to WISER project and raising 10 scholarships for 10 girls in 1 week!

The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Kiss and Tell at 7:30 pm in the LGBT Center. Come ENGAGE in an interactive approach to exploring Romance at Duke (or lack thereof...)


On the Reel: Black Love & Relationships Film Series presents "Love Jones" at 7:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This series is being held in collaboration with WOMENST150S/AAAS199S - Black Love: Romantic Relationships and the African American Experience taught by Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes. The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Social Justice: Lessons from Jena and West Virginia at 8:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Where do we go after Jena? How do we stop incidents from these in West Virginia from happening again? Discuss these and other questions with syndicated radio personality and attorney Warren Ballentine.

The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Roc Tha Mic at 9:14 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. It's that time again!!! Come out and show your talent, or just listen to the best spoken word and poetry Duke has to offer.

Thursday, October 25
An Evening with Krishna Kaur at 7:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. As part of Community Service Week, Krishna Kaur will give an informal talk on Serving the Community - From Africa to Durham, NC (7-8 pm) and will lead a yoga & meditation class immediately following the talk (8-9 pm). This event is free and open to the Duke community and the public. No experience necessary for the yoga class - wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat or towel.

The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents Minority Professionals Panel at 8:00 pm in White Lecture Hall. Not sure how you want to proceed after college? It's never too early to begin thinking about your career, and this panel will discuss both traditional and non-traditional paths to your dream career.

Friday, October 26
A Conversation with Robin D.G. Kelly at 3:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Join us for a dialogue with one of the country's foremost historians of Black culture.

Food Fest 2007: A Taste of the World at 4:30 pm on Main Quad, West Campus. Join International Association for a cultural extravaganza on the Main Quad. Student groups will be representing their countries with a spectacular variety of cuisine and performances from around the world. Cuisines represented: Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Lebanese, German, Arabic, Israeli, Singaporean, Bulgarian, Caribbean, American, Taiwanese, Mexican, Kenyan, Peruvian, French, Thai, Pakistani, Turkish, Ethiopian, Burmese, and more!!!

Sing it, Spit it, Show it: Art & Soul Night at 9:30 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. The center will welcome back neo-soul band, DurtySol, spoken word poetry, and visual art. A Conversation with John Hope Franklin and Romila Thapar at 3:00 pm in Goodson Chapel, Westbrook Building (Duke University Divinity School). Two world-reknowned scholars reflect on the role of the historian in their respective societies and their own involvements in national and local debates around historical truth, political identity, and social reform.

The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presents their Royal Casino Charity Ball at 8:00 pm in North Pavilion. Come enjoy and evening of food, fun and games, all while supporting the March of Dimes. SAVE THE DATE!
Senator Barack Obama will host a "North Carolina Countdown to Change" event at the Leroy T. Walker Physical Education Complex at North Carolina Central University on November 1, 2007. Doors open at 4:00 pm and the event scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm. This event is a fundraiser. Passes to the event can be reserved online at (http://my.barackobama.com/C2CNC). Student admission is $15 and general admission is $25. "Countdown to Change" is the Obama campaign's latest effort to allow grassroots supporters to contribute to the success of the campaign. This event is sponsored and paid for by Obama for America.

Would you like to attend the first national student conference on global warming? The conference is called Power Shift and will teach an expect 2, 500 participating university students about the solutions to global warming and how they can put those solutions into practice on campus, in the community, and in the political arena. Power shift will be held November 2-5 at the University of Maryland College College Park. For more information, visit http://www.powershift07.org.
