Join deans of admission from the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, and the University of Pennsylvania law schools from 7:00-8:00pm in Social Sciences 119 for a realistic look at how applications are reviewed. Panelists and student participants will debate the merits of actual law school applications to select the best. You'll learn what works and what doesn't in the competitive law school admissions process.

Interested in studying abroad? The Annual Global Education (formerly Study Abroad) Fair will be held in the Bryan Center Schaefer Mall from 11:30-3:30pm.


Come out and hear lightning-fast overviews of IGSP faculty’s ongoing research projects and learn how you can get involved. The event will be held from 4:00-5:00pm in LSRC B101 Love Auditorium. Refreshments to follow.

Lazard Middle Market will hold an info session from 5:00-6:15pm in the Bryan Center Von Canon Room A. Come meet employees and learn more about what the company does and what they are looking for.

The Career Center is sponsoring Senior Series: Effective Interviewing Techniques from 5:00-6:00pm in Flowers 201. Attend this workshop for many pointers and to hear what employers are saying about Duke students specifically.


General Electric will hold an info session from 6:00-7:00pm in Teer 203. Come meet employees and learn more about what they do and who they are looking for GE Aviation will be targeting intern candidates, and GE Healthcare will be targeting intern and full-time candidates.


Microsoft will hold an info session from 7:00-8:00pm in West Union Old Trinity Room. Come meet with employees and learn more about what they do and who they are looking for.

Four alumni who have spent time at both hedge funds and investment banks will be giving an overview of the various opportunities available on Wall St, the different paths in getting there, cultural differences between firms, potential pitfalls, and much more. The talk will be held in Social Psychology 130 from 9:00-10:00pm.


If you have never created a resume or are looking for advice on how to improve the one you do have, come to the resume writing workshop to learn about what makes an effective resume, from presentable formats to what to included and leave out. The workshop will be held in Social Sciences 105 from 9:00-10:00pm.

The Career Center will sponsor a cover letter writing workshop on Tuesday, September, 15 from 1:00-2:00pm in Social Sciences 228. Come learn how to write an effective cover letter for any opportunity you may be applying for.



Mars & Co. will hold an info session from 5:00-6:15pm in West Union Old Trinity Room. Come meet with employees and learn more about what they do and who they are looking for.



The Pratt School of Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Career Center will cosponsor a discussion which consists of a moderated panel discussion from technology industry leaders, including a question and answer period for students to inquire about tips and techniques for searching, interviewing and choosing a job. Following the panel discussion, there will be a networking reception. The discussion will be held from 6:30pm-9:30pm in Fitzpatrick Center Schiano Auditorium



Wednesday, September 16

The Career Center will sponsor a Career fair from 10:00am-3:00pm in the Bryan Center. Employer representatives (some of whom may be Duke alumni) from many sectors, including business, technology, education, government and non-profit, will be participating. Be sure to bring your resume!

Could you use some practice interviewing as the recruiting season begins? If so, the Career Center will be conducting mock interviews for students (with limited availability), who want some practice and feedback on their interview skills. Orville Pierson, author of The Unwritten Rules of the Highly Effective Job Search, will discuss how job hunters can use a systematic, project-based approach to job search. His method goes beyond the usual teaching of search-related skills (networking, using the Internet, interviewing and the like) to include defining and evaluating a personal job market and measuring progress in job search - prior to interviews and offers. Orville Pierson will meet with undergraduate students in group advising sessions. The talk will be held from 10:00-11:30am in Bryan Center Meeting Room A. Walltown Neighborhood Ministries is looking for volunteers to help distribute food from 11:00am-1:00pm. Walltown Neighborhood Ministries coordinates a regular food distribution at the end of every month for elderly and disabled families in Walltown, to help them get through these hard economic times. WNM needs volunteers on the third Wednesday of every month to help pick up food from the Food Bank. Volunteers meet at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, at 917 Onslow Street. Tuesday, September 15

What does it mean to be Greek? Come out to White Lecture Hall 107 at 8:00pm to learn about the functions and purposes of Greek organizations, how Greek culture is structured, and the demographic breakdown of the four governing councils.



The LGBT center will host an initial discussion about different groups on campus, events planned through the LGBT center, resources available, ways to get involved, and ways to show your support. All are welcome to the LGBT discussion group, which takes place from 6:00-7:00pm on East Campus, Crowell Building 315.

The Center for LGBT Life will host a talk from 12:00-2:30pm in The Center for LGBT Life 2. This will be an introduction on how faculty, staff, and students can be more supportive/affirming of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals. The Durham nonprofit community center, El Kilombo, will hold its monthly Latin dance benefit to support Durham community programs, such as kids’ literacy, homework help, English language learning and more. Head out to Cimarron Latin Night at Club 9 at 10pm for a free salsa lesson by Sabrosura and a night full of the hottest Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton, and Bachata music. $10 at the door, $5 with RSVP to clubcimarron@gmail.com with your name by Friday. Wednesday, September 16

The Duke Human Rights Center, Lation/a Studies, and Law School and Amenesty International will host a show by award winning Chicano artist Malaquias Montoya from 5:00-6:30pm in Friedl. This show features silkscreen images and paintings dealing with the death penalty and penal institutions.Our two special guests are Darryl Hunt and State Rep. Floyd McKissick (invited). Hunt is a Winston-Salem native who in 1984 was wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of newspaper employee Deborah Sykes. He served over 19 years in prison before being exonerated due to DNA evidence. State Sen. Floyd McKissick, Jr., an attorney, was selected in 2007 to serve out the term of the late Jeanne Hopkins Lucas in the North Carolina Senate. The son of the late civil rights activist Floyd McKissick, the senator is a cosponsor of the Racial Justice Act, signed into law by Gov. Beverly Purdue in August 2009.

Join the Duke Muslim Students Association for a day of fasting - a physical and mental challenge to reconnect with your morality, stand up for social justice, and understand an essential practice of one of the most important religions of the 21st century. This year money will be raised for Mariam Clinic, a free health clinic for uninsured adults www.mariamclinic.org. Sponsors will donate a certain amount to Mariam Clinic for each person who fasts. Sign up at our website, and break fast at a free dinner in the Great Hall from 6:30-9:30pm.

Health and Wellness

Monday, September 14

There will be FREE Rapid HIV testing in the Bryan Center Meeting Room B from 10:00am-5:00pm. No blood is involved. Cheek swabbing will be used instead. Results will be available in only 20 minutes, and those who get tested will receive a FREE t-shirt!
