If you are set on going to Los Angeles in Spring 2010, head out to the Duke in LA Alternatives Information Session from 6:30-7:30pm in Classroom 2 of The Link in Perkins Library. The event is being hosted by the Global Education Office for Undergraduates (formerly Study Abroad) and DSG, and will focus on alternative, comparable opportunities in Los Angeles for students whose only opportunity to participate in Duke in LA would have been Spring 2010. Down to Earth is a dinner series where students can learn from the diverse experiences and research of staff and faculty in a relaxed environment. The first guest is Lee Baker, Cultural Anthropology Professor and Dean of Academic Affairs. Dean Baker is a popular professor turned Dean whose research has focused on the Anthropology of Race and the African-American experience. Wednesday, September 9
The Duke Entrepreneurial Leadership Venture (DELV) will hold an info session from 6:30-7:30pm on DELV programs and resources and how to get involved. All students interested in entrepreneurship and business development are invited to attend. Topics covered in the session include the DELV start-up process and joining DELV committees, idea development and legal aid, incoming speakers and workshops, networking and mentorship, the e-apprenticeship program, and seed funding for new projects. Free food will be provided.


BlackRock will hold an info session from 8:00-9:15pm at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club. Representatives will be on site to answer any questions you may have about opportunities at BlackRock.

The Boston Consulting Group will have Office hours for students to come learn more about the consulting field, BCG, and the role of their associates. In order to prepare students for the largest Career Fair at Duke, which will take place on September 16, the Career Center will host a workshop from 12:00-1:00pm in Flowers 201. The workshop will focus on how to capitalize your access to employers. The workshop will be offered again on Friday, September 11 at 4:30pm.

The Career Center is hosting Senior Series: Assessing Written Credentials from 4:00-5:00pm in Flowers 201. The workshop will focus on how to fully represent yourself accurately trough your resume, cover letter, and written credentials.

The Women’s Center is hosting Sexposé Series: Women, Sex, & Power from 7:00am-8:00am in the lower lounge of the Women’s Center. The series will explore the different dynamics of decisions about sex for women. The first session will be led by Dr. Suzanne Shanahan (Assistant Director of Kenan Institute of Ethics & Sociology Professor) and explore women, sex, & and power.

The film “Mary Poppins” will be shown from 8:00-10:30pm in Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the South Lawn. Admission is FREE! Refreshments will be on sale, and rain dates are the following week. Parking is free after 5:00pm. If the weather looks questionable, go to twitter.com/paullywogprod for updates.

Women Loving Women will have their first gathering of the year to meet new people and catch up with friends from last year. The group will meet from 6:00-8:00pm in the Center for LGBT Life 2 West Union Building. The group was established two years ago to support undergraduate and graduate women who have an attraction to other women. Sunday, September 13
Sister Cities of Durham and the Durham Children’s Choir will produce and present an admission-free Concert for Peace in Durham, NC as part of the 2009 September Concerts for Peace, to be performed simultaneously in more than 100 cities around the world, in commemoration of the September 11th tragedy and to strengthen the spirit of global harmony. The concert will take place at 3:00pm in the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham.

Jeremy Smith, Duke University Library’s Jazz Archivist, will open up the Mary Lou Williams Center jazz season with a talk on current issues in jazz from 8:00-9:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. The first jazz at the Mary Lou will follow the talk at 9:30pm.


Sunday, September 13
Duke’s premier Latin dance troupe, Sabrosura, will hold try-outs from 11:00am-8:00pm in Wilson Recreation Center. This will be the one and only opportunity to show off your Latin dance skills and potentially become a new member of Sabrosura. The try-outs are open to all Duke affiliated people.


Come out to Art with the Experts at the Nasher Museum for a discussion about Picasso and the Allure of Language with Sarah Schroth, the Nancy Hanks Senior Curator, and Juline Chevalier, curator of education. The discussion will be held at the Nasher Museum of Art at 3:00pm.

There will be Bootcamp at Wilson from 7:00-8:00pm in Wilson Recreation Center. The group personal training session includes cardio and strength training in a fun and dynamic format and is appropriate for beginners all the way to advanced exercisers. The series runs from 9/8/09 to 10/1/09 on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. Drop into any class for $10, or bu an 8 class punch card for $64. Cash, checks, or FLEX payments are accepted. Monday, September 7
Know Your Status (KYS) is providing FREE rapid HIV testing in the Bryan Center in Meeting Room B from 10:00am-5:00pm. No blood will be involved. Cheek swabbing will be used instead, and the results will be available in 20 minutes. Those who get tested will receive a free t-shirt!


Thursday, September 10
