Monday, September 21
The Women’s Studies Program is sponsoring a talk by Dr. Anne Cheng from 4:30-6:30pm in East Duke 108. Anne Anlin Cheng is Professor of English and of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University. This talk will be an excerpt from Cheng's forthcoming book, Second Skin: Josephine Baker and the Modern Surface, which studies the figure of Baker as a means to trace the unexpected yet enduring intimacy between the modernist fascination for "pure surface" and the theatricalization of black skin at the turn of the 20th century. She is the author of The Melancholy of Race: Assimilation, Psychoanalysis, and Hidden Grief (Oxford University Press) and has taught, in addition to Princeton, at Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley, on topics such as literary theory, cultural studies, race and gender studies, psychoanalytic theory, postcolonial theory, film studies, poetry and poetics.

Wednesday, September 23
Description: Need to brush up your technology skills? Confused by all the online resources out there? OIT will hold a session that will focus on the online resources available at Duke including a Learn IT Online, a Duke created wiki of online training resources as well as online technology training tutorials that are being piloted at Duke. The session will be held in RENCI Center-Telecommunications Bldg. 106 Science Drive from 12:00-1:00pm. No pre-registration is required for our Learn IT @ Lunch series. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Lunch is not provided. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.

Dr. Esther Ngan-ling Chow, Sociologist from American University, will be joining us for a lunchtime discussion on feminist activism from 12:00-1:00pm. Dr. Chow is considered a pioneer in the scholarship on the intersectionality of race, class, gender and sexuality, particularly in the case of Asian American women. In 2008 Chow was given the Feminist Activism Award by Sociologists for Women in Society in recognition of her extensive activist work with women in China. Lunch will be provided. You will learn about opportunities that are available with each of these firms and have an opportunity to ask questions. Chris Ryan of Moelis & Company will hold a talk from 6:00-7:00pm in Social Psychology 130. Mr. Ryan is Moelis & Company’s Managing Director based in New York and advises clients on risk and balance sheet-related matters and continues the expansion of the firm’s capital markets capabilities. Mr. Ryan has over 25 years of investment banking and fixed income experience, including trading, structuring, capital markets, research, sales and risk management as well as extensive experience building and managing fixed income businesses around the world.

Tuesday, September 22

Walltown Neighborhood Ministries needs volunteers Tuesday, September 22 from 11:00am-1:00pm. WNM coordinates a regular food distribution at the end of every month for elderly and disabled families in Walltown, to help them through these hard economic times. WNM needs volunteers the last Tuesday of every month to help sort the food donations into bags. Volunteers will meet at the WNM building, at 1307 Knox Street. Volunteers are also needed on Thursday, September 24 from 11:00am-1:00pm to help deliver and distribute the food to residents. The Women’s Center is hosting Sexposé Series: Women & Duke Life from 7:00-8:00 pm in the Women’s Center. This will be a panel and discussion session aimed at freshmen women to discuss the Duke social scene and help debunk over-generalized myths of the hook up culture. They will be discussing how perceptions of Duke culture differ between freshmen and upperclassmen women in an aim to raise awareness of these issues, create an open and safe space to discuss concerns, and offer resources for Duke women. Sophomore, junior, and senior women at Duke are all welcome to come and invite all the freshmen women you know. This is a completely CONFIDENTIAL and open discussion.

President Brodhead’s sixth annual Homecoming Dance will be held from 9:30pm- Saturday September 26 1:00am. You'll be amazed at how Wilson Gym and the IM Building are transformed into a party palace. The evening features performances by various Blue Devil dance and a capella groups, as well as a band that will play music for all generations! Wine, beer, nonalcoholic beverages, light hors d'oeuvres, and desserts will be plentiful. Attire: festive, from business casual to cocktail.

North Carolina's largest LGBT pride celebration kicks off from Duke's east campus. The Center for LGBT Life is a sponsor for the event and the Duke LGBT community will have a float in the parade that all are welcome to jump on or walk beside! Line-up begins at 12:45pm. National Panhellenic Council will host a homecoming football game afterparty from 11:00pm to Sunday, September 27 2:00am in Great Hall. The cost is $5.00 before midnight and $7:00 after.

The Annual National Panhellenic Council presents the 2009 Homecoming stepshow! This annual event is a crowd-pleasing, foot-stomping show presented by Duke's National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). It's not only a celebration of the proud history of each organization, but also a fund-raiser that will allow the Duke NPHC to form and sustain community outreach. The show will take place in Page Auditorium from 7:00-9:00pm. General Admission is $12. Duke Students only $10.

Know Your Status is sponsoring FREE, rapid HIV testing in the Bryan Center from 10:00am-5:00pm in Bryan Center Meeting Room B. No blood is involved. Cheek swabbing will be used instead. Results will be available in only 20 minutes, and those who get tested will receive a free t-shirt!
