Wednesday, February 3

BSA will hold its 3rd general body meeting of the year at 6:30pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Come out for important updates on programming and upcoming elections for the 2010-2011 executive board.


Academic Events

Members of the Classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013 if you are interested in being a part of the Africana Mentoring Program Advisory Board please read the following job description. All resumes are due by Friday February 5th at 6:00 pm. After we have received and reviewed all of the resumes we will contact you with further information.

Job Description: The AMP Student Program Advisory Board Member (AMP SPABM) assists with the substantive development and logistical execution of the Africana Mentoring Program and targeted outreach of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture. The AMP SPAMB works to promote the Center’s educational enrichment objectives as they pertain to strengthening Black student personal and professional development and academic performance at Duke University. The AMP Student Advisory Board Member aids in the pairing of members of the senior and junior classes with each sophomore trainee and entering student (who applies to participate in the program) to aid in their transition, selection of major and fuller acclimation to the University. Other responsibilities include the development, execution and evaluation of events (especially mentor training), campaign development and program reporting and evaluation.For a more complete description of the Advisory Board Member responsibilities please email Kristina.broadie@duke.edu.


Tuesday, February 2

MAPS is sponsoring Spotlight on Health: Career Talks from 3:00-5:00pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. Health care professionals will discuss their career path with students who express interest in pursuing the same profession. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and seek suggestions on internships.


Heather Smith, Director of Rock the Vote and a young Duke alum, is having an informal chat with Duke students interested in grassroots organizing. She has extensive experience with voter mobilization and led Rock the Vote to its highest voter registration drive in its twenty year history. Ms. Smith has appeared on NBC News, the Today Show, FOX News, CNN, NPR and the BBC. Take this opportunity to share her insights in the political process. The Prebusiness Advising Office will be hosting a GMAT practice test in 023 Bostock at 10:00am. This is an excellent opportunity for students to assess their strength on various areas of the GMAT test and to implement any necessary study strategies for improvement. The series will be an informal opportunity to talk personally to students who have recently done internships in various fields, working for IBM and ABC, non-profit organizations and top universities. Events are held from 5:00-6:00pm in the Center for LGBT Life and are open to all undergraduates, and there is no need to sign-up beforehand.

Community Service Events

Tuesday, February 2

Interested in teaching children? Red Cross needs you! The Red Cross for Kids Committee teaches basic first aid and safety skills at schools and community centers in Durham. These programs aim at providing fundamental and essential knowledge in a fun and interactive setting. FACT/BAT is a six-week program taught by trained Duke students. Each week, volunteers travel to Durham community centers and give 1-hour long lessons in a classroom setting. While we provide a set of lesson plans, volunteers have the freedom to modify the lesson topics and also generate their own lessons. If interested, please email Yaoli Pu at yaoli.pu@duke.edu OR, come to our first training session on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:30 pm (the training will be around 45 minutes to 1 hour) in the link classroom #2. Current instructors, you need to come in to fill out your schedule and background check forms. If you can't make Tuesday's session, there will be another session later in the week, date TBA.

CAPS, in collaboration with the Center for LGBT Life at Duke, is hosting a discussion session, exploring the impact of the media, social pressures, and the emotional experiences associated with the pursuit of physical attractiveness. Facts and tendencies will be offered and invitations issued to share personal experiences, hoping to create a stimulating and supportive discussion. Tuesday, February 2

As a follow up to last year's What Is Spiritual, Anyway? Discussion, psychologists from CAPS will collaborate again with various clergy to host another thoughtful discussion from 7:00-8:30pm in Perkins Library Rare Book Room. Steve Hinkle from Religious Life-Duke Chapel, Abdullah Antepli from Muslim Life at Duke, and Michael Goldman from Jewish Life at Duke will join Joe Talley and Gary Glass from CAPS to offer some conversation starting thoughts and questions. The purpose of this program is not to promote an ideology or specific religious doctrine. Rather, we hope to foster an exchange of caring and curious ideas, to create a space in which we can all learn from each other, and invite new friendships to form.


The Center for LGBT Life is sponsoring Ally Network Training, an introduction for faculty, staff, and students on how to be more supportive/affirming of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals, from 5:00-7:30pm in the Center for LGBT Life. An artificial ice company will be setting up an ice rink on the main quad from 6:00-10:00pm. Students will be able to rent skates from the vendor. Come experience what winter has to offer.


The Kappa Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. cordially invite you to attend the Golden Ivy Charity Ball, which will be held on February 5 at 7PM in the Searle Center. Friday during the month of February and one week in mid-March, from 12:00-6:00pm, the Mary Lou Williams Center will showcase themed groupings of movies about women. FREE popcorn provided.


There will be a Hope for Haiti Benefit Performance in Page Auditorium. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a Haitian market selling coffee, crafts, and artwork. The show continues from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with Haitian dancer Gaspard Louis & company, Reginald Patterson & string quartet, musician Toby Bonar, storytelling from Haiti, and other acts. The suggested minimum donation is $10 (cash only), with all proceeds going to the United Methodist Committee on Relief http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor and Hearts with Haiti http://www.heartswithhaiti.org.

Pilgrimage: A Haitian Benefit Concert, featuring Erol Josué, the Prince of Haitian Roots Music will be held from 8:00-9:30pm in Baldwin Auditorium. A $10 Ticket donation is suggested. All funds will go to Haitian earthquake victims via Red Cross. Advance tickets are available online @ tickets.duke.edu. The Student Health Center and Sabrosura are cosponsoring Find Your Weigh Out- a non diet approach to weight management in Bell Tower 109 (The Oasis) from 4:00-5:00pm. This 4 week class, run by Student Health Dietitians, will teach you how to:- Balance your meals and minimize food cravings- Respond to hunger without over doing it- Manage emotions which can lead to overeating. Group Meetings will be held Monday February 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd from 4-5pm
