BSA Events
Auditions to participate in BSA's Annual Fashion Show held during BSAI Weekend 2010 are coming up this week! There will be a Model Workshop on Wednesday, January 20th at 8:30pm, at which you will find out what it takes to be a part of the show, who is involved, and brush up on your cat walk skills. It is not necessary to attend the workshop to audition, but it could be beneficial to you. Auditions will then be held on Saturday, January 23rd at 12:00pm and 3:00pm (You only need to attend one audition). Both the workshop and the auditions will be held in the Freeman Center. Ladies must wear heels,
3 inches or more, and men must wear hard-bottom shoes (Preferably, no sneakers- ONLY if you absolutely have to). And remember, you do not have to be in BSA to be a part of this event. ALL PEOPLE ARE WELCOME!!! INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!!!

BSA will be co-sponsoring the Diversity Networking Dinner with Mi Gente, Diya, Blue Devils United, and ASA from 7:00-9:00pm in the Bryan Center Von Canon Rooms. The Diversity Networking Dinner is designed to connect Duke students to employers seeking to further diversify their organizations. For students, this event will provide the opportunity to learn about a variety of career fields from actual professionals and network with employers who can help you get one step closer to the internship or full-time position that you want. Companies in attendance will represent a variety of industries including: Finance, Consulting, Environment, Government/Non-Profit, Retail, Technology, and Education. Duke in London-Drama will hold an info session fr0m 5:30-6:30pm in the Bryan Center

There will be a TestMasters LSAT Prep Seminar in Old Chem 123 from 7:00-9:00pm. Pamela Black, a TestMasters instructor, who scored in the 99th percentile on an official LSAT, will cover real LSAT questions, examining the underlying concepts of the test, as well as introducing attendees to several of TestMasters’ methods and techniques. Students will also have a chance to participate in the TestMasters LSAT Challenge. Interested students are given a chance to answer one difficult LSAT logical reasoning question. Each student who answers his or her question correctly will receive a voucher for half off the TestMasters course tuition (a $725 value). All Bench and Bar members receive a $100 course discount upon attending the event (Challenge winners exempt). Duke in Ghana will hold an info session in Allen 103 from 6:00-7:00pm.

A new course is being offered this spring called "The Other African Americans: Black Ethnic Diversity in the United States." It surveys the historical experiences and ongoing self-conceptions of African and Caribbean immigrants and their children, as well as Louisiana Creoles of color, Indians of partly African descent, Gullah/Geechees, and so forth in the United States. A prominent sub-theme of the course is the interaction of such populations on university campuses, including Nigerians, Jamaicans, Trinidadians, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work with and write about the lives of these black ethnic populations on and near campus.

If you are looking for a productive and rewarding way to spend your summer, the Northwestern University Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) may be what you are looking for.The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) provides an opportunity for direct involvement in research and a taste of graduate student life at a world class university. Throughout its 24-year history, the mission of the SROP has been to increase diversity among students pursuing graduate education and to provide valuable academic research experiences. The program is eight weeks in length, from June 21 through August 13, 2010, and includes faculty-supervised research, enrichment activities that prepare students for the graduate school application process (i.e. GRE workshop & application workshop) and a research conference. Current sophomores and juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher are eligible to apply. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate schools (African-Americans, Hispanics, & Native-Americans) are encouraged to apply. Please note that applicants interested in pursuing an MBA, JD, or MD are not eligible for this program. Each SROP participant will receive a stipend of $4000. Northwestern will also provide complimentary campus housing and a $450 campus meal subsidy, in addition to covering round trip air-fare and related ground travel expenses for all SROP participants who will be traveling to Northwestern from outside of the Chicago area. Have you taken Organic Chemistry 152 and are excited to mentor and support your peers? The Multicultural Center is looking for students to serve as Organic Chemistry Learning Community Leaders this Spring semester. The Multicultural Center (MCC) and the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) is offering an exciting internship during which you will receive valuable experience combining community service and leadership. The intern will have the amazing opportunity to provide guidance, mentoring, and tutoring to a community of dedicated peers and create meaningful relationships with influential faculty and staff. Applicants for the internship must have completed Organic Chemistry 151 and 152. The successful candidate will normally work 8-10 hours a week with the Multicultural Center. NASA's Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program, hosted at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, offers paid 10-week summer or 15-week fall and spring internship experiences for rising college juniors and above. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a 3.0/4.0 GPA, and be pursuing a major of interest to NASA including engineering, science, mathematics, or special project areas such as history, journalism, accounting, and photography. There are also opportunities through the LARSS Bridge Program for outstanding rising High School Seniors, College Freshmen, and Sophomores who have a 3.5 GPA and previous NASA program experience. HIA invites applications from college students (current sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and recent graduates (classes of 2008 and 2009) who are intellectually gifted, mature, independent, of diverse backgrounds, and passionate about human rights and social justice. The HIA summer fellowship programs bring together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and human rights doctrines in democratic societies. Separate programs will take place for five weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, and Warsaw. Applications are due on January 23, 2010. Intensive and demanding, the HIA fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians, and activists, as well as a significant number of site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums, and memorials. The programs require a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams. After the summer programs, Fellows are expected to participate in HIA's international network of alumni and to sustain their engagement in the human rights issues addressed during the HIA fellowship. There are also a number of professional fellowship opportunities available for HIA alumni—such as internship programs run by HIA in the U.S. Congress, European Parliament, and community organizations in San Francisco. HIA Fellows are also frequently selected for further post-graduate fellowships, with large numbers of Marshall, Mitchell, Fulbright, Watson and Presidential Management Students of all majors and academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer leadership program in Washington, DC. The Institute provides America’s best and brightest African American male college students with unparalled networking opportunities, leadership development, and life-long mentorship. The program includes exposure to congressmen, Supreme Court justices, doctors, business executives, educators, and other influential leaders, rigorous academic seminars, roundtable discussions, including seminars on leadership development, high-level internships around Washington, DC, and activities that promote strong bonds with each other. In this session students will learn how to create a winning resume for internships, full-time positions and more! This workshop this designed for Juniors, but all students are welcome to attend.

Your interview skills will land you the job or internship. Attend this workshop for many pointers and to hear what employers are saying about Duke students specifically. Students who attend will also be given a tour of the Career Center's new interviewing space in Smith Warehouse!

Andrea Marston will host a Final Hart Fellows info session 5:30-6:00pm in Sanford Room 223. Are you currently in your last year as an undergraduate at Duke? Are you interested in working and living in a developing country? Do you want to combine academic research with service to a community organization? If the answer those questions is “Yes!” then consider applying to become a Hart Fellow! The Hart Fellows Program, which is part of the Hart Leadership Program and is based out of the Sanford School of Public Policy, offers recent Duke graduates the opportunity to spend 10 months working with organizations around the world that are facing complex social, political and humanitarian problems. TechConnect, an annual event hosted by the Duke University Department of Computer Science and Pratt School of Engineering, brings students and employers together for networking and education and will be held from 6:00-9:00pm in Fitzpatrick CIEMAS Atrium. Based on industry partner feedback, we are pleased to introduce Spring TechConnect 2010! The evening will begin with a vibrant networking event. Students from all classes are welcome to visit with employer representatives, many of whom are Duke alumni. This venue provides a less formal environment than the traditional Career Fair. The format of providing company-specific chat areas and signage for each company offers students and employers an easy way to connect. Networking will be followed by industry break-out sessions geared towards specific industry segments: Medical Device, Energy and the Environment, Software and Computing, Infrastructure, and Engineering Technology.
