Black History Month Facts
Blacks make up 13.5 percent of the U.S. population and are the largest minority group in 23 states.

The first Black U.S. senator was Hiram Revels of Mississippi from February 25, 2870-March 4, 1871.

Thurgood Marshall became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice in 1967 and served until 1991.

The inventor of the blood blank was Charles Drew, an African American.

The first Black millionaire was Madame C.J. Walker

BSA Programs
Candidates' Forum
BSA will be sponsoring a Candidates' Forum at 7:00 pm in the Mary Lou Williams Center. This will be your chance to hear from candidates running for positions on the 2009-2010 Executive Board.  This event will count towards active membership.  Remember, only active members can vote.

Allen Building Takeover Commemoration Event
BSA will be sponsoring an event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Allen Building Takeover on Friday, February 13th at 4:00 pm in the Allen Building. Learn about the momentous takeover, which has impacted all aspects of campus life.

BSAI Fashion Show Auditions
BSAI is right around the corner and the Fashion Show will be holding auditions next week. Make sure to stay tuned to hear about the date and times of auditions.

Academic Events
Comments Invited for Regular Review of Benjamin Reese

Monday, February 9th
DSG presents a Financial Aid Info Session and Talk with Alison Rabil from 4:00-5:30 pm in French Sciences 2231. Come talk with Duke's Director of Financial Aid to inform students about the aid opportunities available at Duke and to answer any questions students may have about the process. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

MAPS is having a general body meeting from 8:00-9:00 pm in White Lecture Hall on East Campus. Ms. Paula Borden of the UNC SEP (similar to SMDEP) will be talking about this program. This will also be a chance to learn about upcoming events by MAPS.

Tuesday, February 10th
The Provost's Office presents "Policy Visions for a New Presidency: Powering and Empowering America in the 21st Century" from 5:00-6:30 pm in Love Auditorium in LSRC. This presentation will show some of the greatest policy challenges of our generation.

Saturday, February 14th
The North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP presents its Historic Thousands on Jones Street at 9:30 am at Chavis Park in Raleigh. This event is dedicated to the enactment of the 14-point agenda advocating anti-racism, anti-war, a better healthcare and education system, and a progressive agenda pushing the banner of justice forward by providing change in the state public policy.

The Career Center presents Internship Funding Program 2009 Information Session from 12:00-1:00 pm in Flowers 201. Learn how to receive funds for low-paying or non-paying internships this summer. Monday, February 9th
Witness "Wax figures from the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum on Display" from 10:00 am-6:00 pm in Duke Medical Center Library. Four wax figures from the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, each representing an important historical African Americans in the field of medicine, will be on display.

Thursday, February 12th
The Nasher Museum of Art presents a discussion by Duke Professor Richard Powell on his new book "Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture" at 5:30 pm in the Nasher. A reception will follow the talk.

Friday, February 13th
Duke Africa and the International House present "Connecting Blackness Across the Atlantic: Making Sense of a Gullah Custom by Revisiting its West African Origin" from 6:00-8:00 pm in the International House at 2022 Campus Drive. Watch a screening of "The Language You Cry In" and engage in a short discussion will follow on how some trends within African American culture and tradition can be traced back to African roots. Refreshments will be provided.

The Asian Students Association (ASA) presents Lunar New Year 2009 at 7:30 pm in Page Auditorium. Come celebrate the Year of the Ox with catered dinner followed by a spectacular show of cultural acts. Dinner tickets ($5) and show tickets ($6 early and $10 regular) can be purchased. All proceeds will go towards a rural school in China.

Freewater Presentations presents "Twilight" from 7:00-9:00 pm in Griffith Theater in the Bryan Center. See this popular movie based on the best-selling novel for $1.
